View MoreSaw this beautiful little film. In the beginning I saw a woman with her dog on the bed. Then I find out that dog is sick and has to be put to sleep so I was thinking where this movie is going? Then suddenly I was engaged into the story of this older woman who is living a retired life and she just takes it, what life brings to her. It was actually very interesting and I could relate to it because I have a friend Julie who had a dog as her best friend for years and then she had to put her to sleep because her dog got really old and could not walk anymore. Danning then meets this guy who comes to clean her pool. It was so interesting to see that they just did not fall in love. It was a platonic relationship and they just enjoyed this friendship on this journey of life. Not every man which comes in her life is going to be her boyfriend. We meet people along the way and we give them chances and thats what I liked about this film. Its so simple story and so beautifully told and so close to life. This character just takes what life gives it to her and she is content with it. Danning gave a great performance and the pool guy was a good actor. I liked the daughter with her innocent face and acting skills. The scene where mother and daughter talk after such a long time made me cry.
View MoreYou see I am almost the same age as Blythe Danner so I have a really good appreciation for the themes in this movie. In real life Blythe Danner lost her husband Bruce Paltrow so she really has been and still is living the life of an older widow. In this movie she is Carol Petersen. She forms an unlikely friendship with the pool guy who is young enough to be her son. She sees him as a compatible friend, but he starts to see her as a possible love relationship. They both learn something. It isn't that unlikely because the actress in her early 70s is still quite graceful and good-looking, so when Bill (Sam Elliot) meets her it is easy to understand why he, seemingly a confirmed bachelor, is smitten.I would guess many of the younger crowd will (would) find this movie a bit boring but it really is a good examination of relationships once the "shine" has gone.A bonus, for me at least, was getting to see and hear Danner sing. It is not well known but early in life she became a trained vocalist and considered a career as a jazz singer before she settled on acting. She performs on stage in this movie and she really is good.
View MoreWatching this movie sets you in a specific mode where you start wondering about your life, past, future and present. The performance of the actors was phenomenal, screenplay captivating. The directing was walking on a thin line with the story but successfully crossed the whole way to make a great movie. The soundtrack was amazing nicely added to the scenes you feel its natural and in place, the theme song was like the glue that puts everything together. I loved the rat idea, I loved the rhythm of the movie I loved everything about it , way to go guys and I wish for more of these nice movies.
View MoreSo here is the thing, I am afraid this is the second review in succession I will make about a movie which content I cannot understand. Not that I did not get the conversations or the language, I just did not get what the intention of the movie was. So we have an old single lady who plays cards with a group of friends her age. She starts developing a friendship with the pool boy, she dates a guy who dies before it gets interesting, and she smokes a spliff with her retired girlfriends. So was the director trying to make a movie about love? If that's the case I saw very little of it. Was the movie about living a second life? If that's the case, then going on 2 dates with a guy and smoking pot is hardly considered wild partying in my books. Was the movie about friendship? Well, as I said the protagonist becomes friends with the pool boy. Maybe that's it! It's a movie about friendship. If that's the case, you will learn more about friendship having a drink with your mates than watching this utterly boring flick. Stay away or use it to get to sleep.
