That was an excellent one.

The film creates a perfect balance between action and depth of basic needs, in the midst of an infertile atmosphere.

This second version of the Capote story as the writer of In cold blood beats the first. Infamous depicts the story much better, and hilariously, rendering Truman more truly I believe. His relationship with the murderers is also much more credible here. If true, this would make the films In cold Blood and Capote rather inaccurate regarding the real nature of the killers, especially Capote's friend.

I just saw this amazing film for the first time today. This is several months after I saw Philip Seymour Hoffman's Oscar winning performance in Capote. Hoffman earned that Oscar, no question. I believe Toby Jones' performance was unfairly lost in the shadow.Upon hearing of the murders of the Clutter family in Kansas, Capote, along with close friend Harper Lee (Sandra Bullock), travel there to get responses from the locals. Upon the arrest of Perry Smith and Dick Hickock, Capote takes his novel in a different direction. He wants to get the story from the source.Dick Hickock (Lee Pace) speaks openly, Perry Smith (an unrecognizable Daniel Craig) is closed and suspicious. Capote spends much of the film trying to establish a relationship with him. What starts as a love/hate relationship evolves into one of trust and respect and, dare I say it, love. Not romantic to be sure, but love nonetheless. The whole story, from meeting the two killers for the first time, until their eventual execution set the stage for the remainder of Capote's life and death less than 20 years later. The ending, so very simple, speaks volumes.

I finally caught up with Infamous and found it one of the most intriguing movies I have seen in years. Toby Jones gave a much more rounded and three-dimensional portrayal of Capote than Hoffman's in Capote. All the performances were excellent and I was totally absorbed from start to finish. Sandra Bullock, as Harper Lee, gives one of the more nuanced performances I have seen from her. In fact, all the characters were portrayed with subtlety, without any grandstanding. Jeff Daniels, as the main lawman in the case of the murders that Capote goes to Kansas to investigate, is a good example of this, as is Daniel Craig. Anyone who has not seen this movie should do so asap.

Truman Capote has always been a hero of mine. As one of the most unusual characters of our time, he was the apotheosis of integrity. Also, one of the great talents in all of literature. While his canon is small, his work sparkles. Also, he was his own man. Imagine a macho reporter going to death row to interview two of the most despicable criminals in history. This film shows what a risk he took for his art. His relationship with Perry was complex and captivating. He did what he could in preparation for "In Cold Blood" to try to get at the humanity of the men. It shows what a great writer/researcher and artist he was because he never let his predisposition get in the way of his writing. We also get to see his I foibles and his incredible arrogance. He so enjoyed being the center of attention with his friends, needing their constant adulation. This is a true character study. I think that "Capote" is slicker and of course Philip Seymour Hoffman is such a great actor, but this film doesn't back down. I missed it the first time through.
