Lack of good storyline.

Excellent but underrated film

best movie i've ever seen.

A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

A tad bit depressing and dark for me, I kept hoping some of the characters would break free from their cynicism, angst, etc. What I liked most about this movie was the soundtrack. Although much of it was part of the scene and a distant, hardly audible stereo playing in the background, still it was very good.

I was stumbling on the internet and found this movie, and with a cast of the likes of Nicole Kidman, seeing Jack Black (who I passionately dislike) doing a dramatic role, and some minor roles with Ciarán Hinds, I thought it was worth the shot and I was right.Basically the movie is about Margot (Kidman), whose sister (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is getting married with a struggling artist, Malcolm (Jack Black), and decides to attends to the wedding days before it actually takes place, even though both sisters haven't spoken in years. Both sisters share moments and secrets that afterwards are revealed, and both sisters do not agree on how the other is carrying her life, and while their pre-adolescent kids get acquainted, their lives start taking a certain turn.I loved the acting in this movie, Nicole Kidman most of her work is flawless, and this is no exception, I can think of maybe 2 or 3 actresses that may have been able to carry the role of Margot as great as she did, but I'm sure Nicole was the best fit as the self-centered, judge and troubled Margot, who is juggling with the idea of leaving her husband while having an affair. Jennifer Jason Leigh, honestly i don't think I've ever seen her before, but she was perfect in this role and Pauline, the insecure, persuasive sister. I think Jack Black, who plays the groom who pretends he doesn't care about other people's opinions, did a good job here, actually in this movie I laughed more than in any of his comedy roles, I sure hope that was meant to happen. He was the only one who actually knew what was going on in the house, and was honest enough to reveal his secret to his bride before the wedding, but only because he was under a lot of pressure. I'm going to make a special mention to Ciarán Hinds, who may have had maybe 10 minutes of screen time, but his character Dick was important in the story as Margot's lover, who shakes Margots foundations and leaves her emotionally shattered in public, and then literally kicks butts (or butt).I actually enjoyed this movie, the relationships were very well portrayed, real, a film that undresses a family that is supposed to be on the verge of one of the happiest moments of a person's life: a wedding. In the end, we're all humans, and sometimes we don't like how human flaws are portrayed and showed to us.

While an intelligent portrait of a highly dysfunctional family that shares a lot in tone and style with Baumbach's 'Squid and the Whale', this is colder, more distant and less moving. That's OK, and it's still WAY above most of what's out there, but it's hard not to feel there's a great movie trapped in this good one. One thing that hurts is that (unlike 'Squid') the acting is uneven. Jack Black, an actor I always enjoy, seems a bit uncomfortable playing a tragic as well as comic figure. But this is one of those complex films I'll re-visit one day, and could imagine liking more on re- seeing, being prepared for it's difficult tone.

Margot at the Wedding stars one of the greatest living actresses, Nicole Kidman in a stellar turn in this nice, small film.The story is simple. Easy to follow. The mix of comedy and drama is well executed here. The laughs are fast, but effective. There's also a great deal of family drama here. The direction is a hit or miss kind of deal. The director's style is light. It never is obnoxious in your face, it's very subtle. This may bore many fans of Kidman or Jack Black compared to some of their other films. It worked on me, and I thought it worked for most of the time. But, there are some moments where you're sitting there, wondering how can character's be so cruel. Almost as if they are overwritten at times. It's very dark material, but works nine out of ten times.Kidman drives the film in a very restrained, sarcastic performance. It's great. She's wonderful. One of her best post-Oscar performances for sure. Margot on the page was probably a very unlikeable character, but Kidman's touch on things almost makes you have sympathy for her. Jennifer Jason Leigh plays her sister, in a very fine, rich, layered performance. Jack Black tones down the obnoxious comedy here for the most part and works well with the other actors. The child actors are very good here as well, especially the actor who plays Margot's son, Zane Pais. He goes head to head with Kidman a few times and comes out on the other end smiling.Margot at the Wedding is a dark tale of a somewhat-broken family. It's not very long, which is good for me. I dislike films that must go on and on. The story and characters feel authentic, it's written with razor-sharp comedy and contains a excellent performance from Nicole Kidman; 8.
