That was an excellent one.
just watch it!
A bit overrated, but still an amazing film
All that we are seeing on the screen is happening with real people, real action sequences in the background, forcing the eye to watch as if we were there.
View More**SPOILER** If you figured out 'Primeval' (2006) was about a killer croc before seeing it, consider viewing it anyway...you will not be disappointed, as its worth watching. The acting works & the cinematography is breathtaking. It's Primeval's writing that wasn't altogether cohesive...fresh in most respects, but simply lacking in some instances (fish hut scene for one). I really enjoyed 'Lake Placid' (1999), but I still can't quite place 'Primeval' in the same company as others have, as the limited humor in 'Primeval' has a very different delivery, & is much darker as well. 'Primeval' more ably favors comparisons to 'Anaconda' (1997) or 'Congo' (1995) in plot & atmosphere. For some, the bitter warring between the Burundi government & Hutus as a backdrop for this thriller, is a troublesome distraction. I for one found the weaving of two seemingly disparate narratives (with interesting similarities) to be a brilliant strength. Watch 'Primeval' to see a clever & thrilling take on the serial-killer/monster genre; however, this is not likely going to satisfy the die-hard horror fan. For similar themes consider: 'Rogue' (2007); 'Blood Surf' (2000); 'Alligator' (1980); 'Python' (2000); 'Crocodile' (2000); 'Boa' (2002); & 'Komodo' (2000). Also consider: 'Crocodile 2' (2001); 'The Relic' (1997); 'Python II' (2002); 'Venomous' (2001); 'Anaconda (2): The Hunt for the Blood Orchid' (2004); 'Frogs' (1972); 'Hotel Rwanda' (2005); 'Venom' (2005); 'Sssssss' (1973); 'Sometimes in April' (2005); 'Mimic' (1997); 'Snakes on a Plane' (2006); & 'Boa vs Python' (2004).
View MoreThe title hints it might be a new, somewhat original type of horror film but PRIMEVAL turns out to be that most invariably disappointing of B-movie specimens: the CGI animated killer crocodile flick. I can't help but think that CGI has effectively killed the monster movie stone dead; prior to the mid-1990s, filmmakers had to go out of their way to build life-size replicas for their creature features, and the films featuring such creations had a level of care and respect put into them. Now, anybody can make a B-movie with a CGI menace at its core and the floodgates are well and truly opened for often dire Z-grade efforts.Things at least look interesting at the start: there's a foreign, African locale, and rumours of an age-old serial killer prowling the swamps. The plot soon veers into familiar territory: a news crew is sent out to cover the story and capture the crocodile alive, if at all possible. If you're looking for clichés, look no further than the cast: there's the rugged, square-jawed but one-dimensional hero type (Dominic Purcell, who made his name playing Dracula in BLADE: TRINITY), the pretty/sassy reporter (Brooke Langton), the stereotypical black comic relief guy (Orlando Jones, who delivers one of the most jaw-droppingly offensive lines of dialogue in film history) and the grizzled guide (Jurgen Prochnow, on autopilot). The story soon devolves into repetitive chase sequences as the cast are variously stalked and dispatched by the killer crocodile. A lot of the action takes place at night, thereby disguising the paucity of the special effects budget, and there's only one scene in which the croc is halfway convincing. To add insult to injury, all but one of the African supporting cast seem to consist of thugs and villains to add to the so-called menace. There's absolutely NOTHING here that hasn't been seen before, and I'm astonished that this managed to get a cinema release when it's no better than the run-of-the-mill creature flicks that the Sci-Fi channel has been churning out for the last decade or so.
View MoreI've seen many killer crocodilian films, some good and some bad. This film surpasses most of them, if not all of them. Primeval (not to be confused with the TV series) centers around a crocodile that actually exists in Burundi locally known as Gustave, who is rumored to have killed approximately 300 people. Attempts on his life were made but so far he's only suffered minor gunshot wounds. Gustave is still alive to this day and he's living large. Now on to the movie. Taking place during a genocidal civil war in Burundi, a news crew and a herpetologist (a person who studies reptiles) are sent in to capture the legendary Gustave, who has grown a taste for human flesh thanks to bodies being dumped into his river during the genocide. Things look bad enough when the croc turns the tide on them but then the gang gets targeted for death by a crime lord called Little Gustave because they filmed an execution he pulled off. Our heroes must do all they can to survive the onslaught of both man and a force of nature.Going into this movie, I expected it to be just a silly low-budget film but was 100% wrong. It's a serious and pretty well-thought out movie. The special effects for the mighty Gustave are amazingly good and his attacks plus the human deaths are gruesome and brutal. With a decent cast like the comedic Orlando Jones and great, scary scenes involving the crocodile, this is one of my favorite killer croc films and I do recommend that you see for yourself.
View MoreThe cast is okay and the production quality is good enough to make this kind of watchable, otherwise, the movie is just all over the place. African politics, native tribes, betrayal, sabotage, shamans, rocket launchers, black-guy-comedy and what not and then also there is a crocodile, for some reason. So what is this movie about? There is a lot of stuff aimlessly thrown around, genres mixed, but no part of it is going anywhere. Scenes are pasted together randomly and taking out any of them wouldn't generally influence the plot at all.Now there is at least the crocodile, you might think, but if you're looking for a creature feature, look elsewhere. The croc is not believable or awesome in any way, disregarding it's 10 tons or so it has the agility of your average urban squirrel, moving so fast you barely see what's going on at all, making this part randomly pasted in CGI animation. All this is hard to forgive already, but then the movie also totally fails to build up any kind of tension. There is something going on and then suddenly you get a minute of flying crocodile, people firing rockets at each other, or whatever and then you're back to the pointless "plot" where nothing actually develops. What makes this boat sink, is that there is absolutely no suspense going on and you'll find yourself looking at your watch frequently.Bad, boring, stupid movie.3/10
