What makes it different from others?
If you like to be scared, if you like to laugh, and if you like to learn a thing or two at the movies, this absolutely cannot be missed.
View MoreI didn’t really have many expectations going into the movie (good or bad), but I actually really enjoyed it. I really liked the characters and the banter between them.
View MoreThere's no way I can possibly love it entirely but I just think its ridiculously bad, but enjoyable at the same time.
View MoreThree horny teenagers use a dating website to hook up with a middle-aged woman, but instead find themselves trapped by heavily armed Christian extremists who intend to punish the trio for their sins.I'm not the biggest fan of Kevin Smith, but I do enjoy me some violent action/horror. Sadly, Red State isn't about to convince me that Smith is any more than someone who peaked with their debut movie, and who has been very fortunate to continue working in the business as long as he has. Clearly stepping outside of his comfort zone, Smith delivers a very uneven film that wants to be all thing to all men, but which actually leaves the viewer wondering what the point of the whole damn thing was.Not scary enough to be a horror, not exciting enough to pass as an action film, and with virtually no comedy, the film also gives us no one to root for, killing off its three teenagers at the halfway mark. Towards the end, I did think that the director had managed to pull off a clever and extremely bold trick, with the supernatural heralding of the rapture proving the religious fanatics to be right after all, but this turns out to be a convenient red herring, merely a contrived way of wrapping up the film.
View MoreI don't understand why this movie doesn't have a higher ranking. I saw this movie without even knowing it was written and directed by Kevin Smith. When mentioning to one of my friends that i had seen probably the best horror movie since "Silence of The Lambs", they had informed me that it was Kevin Smiths attempt at a horror flick. Seriously though, the preacher plays one of the most believable characters I have ever seen in a movie, let alone a horror-ish movie. I am a tough critic with movies in general and this is definitely in my top 10.ITS AN ORIGINAL MOVIE FOR CHRISTS SAKE! Every year recycled dumb plots hit movie theaters, and the horror genre is the absolute worst. "Split 2017" has a higher rating than this movie, seriously wtf? It's laughable.Overall.... Plot: A+ Acting: B+ - A (Preacher is one of the best ever.) Cinematography: A (its a very unique style) If you haven't seen this yet and you are somehow reading this review. Just watch the movie.
View MoreJohn Goodman Michael Parks "Red State" tells the story of three teenage boys looking for a hot night, that stumble into an extremist church instead and are threatened with death and the actions this leads to.My five stars are a hard judgment. There would have been reasons to give it a six, but somehow it doesn't feel right. Learning that this was one of Terentino's favorite films of 2011, I get the feeling we don't share a taste in films. What's really good though about Red State is the casting. Exceptional acting by John Goodman and Michael Parks really create believable characters and there are several more that really put their heart in it. I guess that the topic of religious fundamentalism is as urgent as ever and surely delivers good points for a thrilling plot. Altogether, I have to state nonetheless that there was plenty of time wasted in this film. While some aspects of the story fall quite short we get to see extensive preaches and minutes of shooting instead. In my opinion a more clever use of time would have put some more depth into the story. Also in the end the film just tried to include a few to many aspects like terror laws, faith in general, hidden homosexuality and thereby misses to create one stringent viewer experience.I am most certain that some people will love this movie and I can think of quite a few reasons to justify this, all in all it just wasn't a hundred percent my cup of tea.
View MoreThis film has severe credibility problems. In fact, I would rather believe everything that happens in a previous Kevin Smith outing, "Dogma". Here, the naturalistic style sets demands for a credible plot, and these demands are not met. The antics of the three youngsters are barely believable, the church services even less so - and the actions of the authorities definitely not.Apart from credibility, it gets quite depressing. Everyone you supported gets shot, and the characters most deserving to get killed survive. In a normal film, Jared and Cheyenne would survive and fall in love - that would have been predictable, but more entertaining than this gloomfest. The ending is a complete failure. Apparently the money ran out and the filmmakers were forced to improvise a cheap interrogation scene to tie the loose ends.On the positive side, Michael Parks is excellent as the patriarch of the cult - exactly as they are in real life. The other actors are all good too, it is a pity that the script lets them down.
