While investigating the horrifying death of her boyfriend, Mai Takano learns about a videotape haunted by the spirit of a disturbing girl named Sadako, which kills anyone who watches it exactly one week later. It's fun, it's light, [but] it has a hard time when its tries to get heavy.

There are better movies of two hours length. I loved the actress'performance.

I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

There's a more than satisfactory amount of boom-boom in the movie's trim running time.

I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed Ringu after years of only having the Hollywood remake and its sequel to deal with. When the opportunity arose to finally view the original Japanese versions I turned the lights off and got ready for a scare-fest. What surprised me about Ringu was the fact it was different from The Ring (or should I say the Hollywood remake was different from the original film?) Ringu made a bit more sense than its Hollywood remake, it relied more on the Rosemary's Baby School of Scares and delivered a creepy, satisfying film. This sequel? Not so much.Perhaps it's the difference in cultures, but having seen (and enjoyed) the Hollywood sequel The Ring Two, and being intrigued by its concept of connection between Samara, Naomi Watts' character's son and water, I figured Ringu 2 would have some sense of familiarity. Instead, Sadako is relegated to almost nothing until the finale, the story (if you can call it that) hops all over the place and character motivations come out of nowhere (Sadako's father embraces death like a martyr after standing around doing nothing for the whole film), and while the main actor in Miki Nakatani has a great face for horror films (her scared face is thoroughly enjoyable!!) the connection to the mother established in the first film dissipates, and we don't even get to see what could have been the most harrowing scene in any horror movie ever (the implication Reiko copied the cursed video, got her son to make her father watch it, essentially making her kill her father), it's all glossed over and thoroughly unsatisfying. While the Hollywood sequel had crazy water effects and, yes, CGI deer, at least it still had the backbone of the mother-son relationship. While this is technically the third film in the Japanese series, made only a year after the original two, it feels like it's already running out of fuel and I walk into the final film with what are quite possibly the lowest expectations I've ever experienced for a horror sequel, and that's saying something.

I enjoyed the first ring film from Japan, it was eerie and sufficiently creepy. Then I watched Rasen, and it had a cool moment here and there, but was a strange and disappointing sequel. Now I have watched this one and it is bland and boring...sadly the American sequel was better and I usually prefer the Japanese version of films. I now know that Rasen is the official sequel and actually related to the book while this one was made because that film was received so poorly, so everything you saw in Rasen forget about it. Though strangely this film answers the question of why we went from little girl to adult creepy woman. In the end, though, I think I would have preferred never to have seen either sequel as both really just ruin what was established in the first film. The story is somewhat similar to Rasen as we are once again following Mai. People are still trying to do stories about the video tape and the mother and son from the original are on the run. Seriously, there really is not a whole lot of story here. Just people making discoveries and me being bored to tears. Not even a cool autopsy scene to at least satisfy the part of me that likes gore. For the most part it is little boy has key and lots of water. The American version was not a favorite of mine either, but it played out better than this one. This one just seemed to have no focus, we go form this person and that person. We keep having to look at stuff and flashbacks it just feels messy. There are only a couple of things in this one that carried over to the American version and that is the fact the boy is the focal point, water is pivotal and the strange chase scene up the well.So no, I did not like this film much at all. Rasen and this film keep trying to explain everything in scientific terms rather than it just being an evil spirit. I also have Ringu 0, but after watching these other two sequels I am not sure how up to the task I will be at watching a prequel.

Tokyo-1997

This is an average film for me and was much worse than the original one. This film has many scares but none of them shows Sadako coming out of the TV set which was what I was expecting. This film was much less scary than the first one. The storyline of this film is a decent one which shows how the main characters try to stop the curse. The first half of the film was very interesting and quite scary especially one scene in the hospital. The opening scene of this movie was good. This movie around the halfway mark showed the boy having physic powers which was still interesting. However the second half of this movie is just confusing and quite ridiculous. There was not much emotion among the characters. I could hardly understand what was happening. The thing that was really annoying was that Sadako was so scary in the first film. In the second film they just made Sadako into a plasticine toy. The way they solved the problem was far too easy. How could the main characters just transmit their fear like that? Why did they suddenly end up in the well? I found it hard to understand. At least there was still a decent plot up to here. The ending of the film was probably the worst part in the entire film. The film focuses so much on the main characters but end up showing a girl which seldomly pops up smiling in the end. People said it was like the shutter ending, but I thought the ending for shutter was far better than this. This ending is way more silly than the Shutter's. Another thing I hated about the ending is the emotion of that girl who laughed. She has such a strong grudge against that man so why did she laugh so loudly. I could not understand that part at all. The first 2/3 of the film was quite good but the last 1/3 of the film was really bad. This film is an average film for me and is is still recommended if you like the original version of this film.

The first film was a brilliant chilling masterpiece, and this is a good little follow up considering that sequels to classics are a bad idea usually. However as the film progresses it gets gradually worse and then you realise it is just another example of bad sequels to classics. There are, however, some chilling scenes e.g, the scene where the mirror on the wall reflects Sadako's mother combing her hair and that eerie tone kicks in. Then there's the scenes that just go too far with the supernatural ideas and result in being near fantasy. The end is by far too much of a muddle and the whole idea of water being transferred through the mind is too far-fetched. However, despite what i've just said, I urge you to watch this instead of the remake which is ten times worse!
