What makes it different from others?
Excellent and certainly provocative... If nothing else, the film is a real conversation starter.
View MoreGreat example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.
View MoreStory: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.
I must agree with the filmmaker Nicolas Winding Refn on that score. It's more enticing and interesting as a curiosity when viewed as an urban legend. It was really the work of a shrewd / demented marketing "genius", Allan Shackleton, that made it what it is. He took footage shot by exploitation veterans Michael and Roberta Findlay and devised his own "shocking" ending, passing the production off as a supposed actual snuff film. The movie is noteworthy more for its reputation than most anything in it. It tells a story of an actress, Terry London (Mirtha Massa) arriving in South America to film a movie for sexploitation king Max Marsh (Aldo Mayo). While this is going on, a Manson-type cult leader named Satan (Enrique Larratelli) and his brood plan diabolical things for Terry's unborn child. As you'll see if you watch this, the dialogue is sometimes hilarious, the performances and the dubbing are just terrible, and that damned music rarely stops playing. All in all, this is a reasonably amusing pile of trash, with some tacky gore and a number of breast shots. After a while, though, it may cease to be all that entertaining, even for trash fanatics. That brings the review to the ending, attempting to play as "reality", but that would be hard to buy for just about anybody considering how unconvincing the effects are. One will also notice that in order to sell the concept, there are no credits of any kind, just the title.Viewers may want to give this a look just to be able to say that they've seen it.Five out of 10.
View MoreFirst time I'd seen the film recently, but have been meaning to watch it for years. Watching it out of time, as opposed to watching it on a dodgy video or flea pit cinema when it came out, Snuff/ The Slaughter is pretty much standard viewing for these kind of films. Seen better but who cares. The ending is worth hanging out for just for the effect of being ripped out of the plot that came before it. A great idea and a breaking of the fourth wall that I haven't seen bettered. Forget the negative reviews or the dodgy effects (including bad lighting half way through), and be entertained! On a side note, check out Blood Sucking Freaks. And learn how to cook chicken the right way.
View MoreNotorious cult item that has to do with a Manson-like cult leader and his bevy of lovely women who do his bidding. They kill a bunch of people before finally targeting a pregnant actress and her rich boyfriend.Aside from that main storyline, there's also a tacked on ending that was falsely advertised to have been real snuff footage. The gore doesn't even look realistic though, especially the snipping off of a finger. No question about it, this is a bad movie. It's also pretty aimless, and there's a ridiculously overlong parade scene that made me want to hit the fast-forward, though I resisted. There is admittedly some fun to be had, as much of the film is really cheesy with some elements that you can't help but laugh at, not the least of which is the dubbing. Other than the cheese, the only other thing I liked about this movie was the presence of cult actress/director Roberta Findlay as one of the cult followers. I've always had the hots for her, so seeing her here or in any other film is always a pleasure. My praise for "Snuff" stops there, however. Most will flat-out hate it, and frankly, I can't blame them.
View MoreI do not want to repeat former comments about the low quality of this film but as a fan of Joe Bob Briggs I do give it one breast for 2-3 gratuitous topless scenes and 1 lacy pantie scene. Perhaps it should have been subtitled Snuff w/ a little naughty stuff. It is a good 100 min of escape and enjoyment if you accept that most films are made on a shoestring and this one did not disappoint on a dollar for dollar basis. Think Waterworld and Heaven's Gate. Movies should be seen as entertainment kind of like jokes or short stories. There are classic jokes (The Aristocrats) and classic short stories (Gift of the Magi), but bad jokes and bad short stories don't mean the genre is bad. Roll with campy humor/horror. It is one of the last vestiges of the vaudeville concepts of over the top presentations
