You won't be disappointed!

This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

The acting in this movie is really good.

This film tells the life of Jesus Christ as a story. Directed by Christopher Spencer, its a spin-off from the series "The Bible", of the "History Channel". The main role is played by Portuguese actor Diogo Morgado.This film has been subject of negative reviews for allegedly not do a literal reading of the biblical texts. Evangelical Christians were furious, conservative Catholics too. Some of the criticism has logic but others are pure religious fanaticism of people for whom the Bible is untouchable, no matter how many times it has been mistranslated, amputated (in pages or even entire books), rewritten and censored until get the version that we have in our house. This is the problem when we talk about movies with religious themes: people just aren't able to see beyond their beliefs.When I knew that "History Channel" would make this spin-off, I knew immediately that it was just to make the most profit of a production that had been very expensive. Since a few years ago, the contents of this TV channel (at least here, in the western corner of Europe) has had less and less quality (the programs come from America and speak only about pawn shops, cars, scrap and theories, absolutely idiotic, about ancient extraterrestrials). So I loved the original series, it was much better than the programs they normally broadcast. I didn't expect something too glued to the biblical text but a tale, inspired in the concept "Bible told as a story". The film follows this model, telling Jesus'story from birth to ascension. Purists may not like it but, nowadays, this material can be very useful, drawing attentions to the Bible in a world when every less people have it in home.The film does a very regular job telling the life of Jesus. Its greatest sin is still too much like the TV series, as if it were an expanded chapter. The special, visual and sound effects aren't cinematic enough, the soundtrack is not particularly relevant. As a movie film its bad, but as a TV film it works well. The actors, as expected, are absurdly unknown to most of the public. This includes the protagonist, the Portuguese actor Diogo Morgado, who made Jesus Christ. Like most of the Portuguese, I followed Morgado's career, who gained fame in our country through television soap operas and series, and a few Portuguese movies where he participated. Its not a bad choice for the role, although I think that Jesus will probably have been much darker than Morgado (the actor even has light brown hair), like most of the Jews.

John 1:1 (MSG) When the Father God made creation He said that man should not be alone. Man became flesh. Flesh became the Word. The Word became flesh and blood through the Father's only begotten Son. He walked among us as one of us preaching and teaching the Word of His Father. When He became full of stature, Jesus became the way for us to live. We have sinned, but He came to this earth to take that sin away with the washing of His blood. This is not a movie review, this is a story, a gospel in the making for 2,000 years. No thing can compare to the vastness of knowing who this man was, is and forever to come. The Jews were seeking a king, they got the Son of God.

As a Catholic, I was looking forward to seeing Son of God. Although I had not seen the mini- series this is based on, I didn't care. I knew this would not be as good as the series, but seeing this first would make my experience with it better. I had heard negative reviews towards this, most of which were harsh, but I understand.Not many feature films cover Jesus' full life. The ones that do are epics and this is 136 minutes. Despite being condensed, I was surprised to see how poor the first half was. Everything before Palm Sunday is a sloppy mess with everything randomly thrown in at different spots. There's no build-up, follow-through, transition, or full segment. I was very unimpressed. But then Palm Sunday happened...Diogo Mordago plays a hip, charismatic Jesus that I liked. He can relate to people and have fun with them. I heard negative feedback about his performance but I liked it. Who wouldn't want God to be tender and charismatic? He is the only thing that got me through the first little bit. Palm Sunday is when the structure and storytelling improves to a high degree, but visible flaws fly...Son of God goes into detail on why people were deadset on Jesus dying on the cross. It is explained better than lots of other Jesus movies I've seen. This is a high point. When Jesus gets tortured and crucified, it is not as bad as Passion of Christ in 2004, but still brutal enough to be accurate. The accuracy in brutality of the crucifixion is played about perfectly. Sadly, flaws surround it which keeps it from living up to its potential. The first big flaw (after Palm Sunday) happens when Jesus gets arrested and Peter cuts off the guard's ear: everybody watches the ear being cut off and Jesus healing it, yet they arrest him anyway. Bible stuff aside, that is very unrealistic. In reality, they would have told Pilate about what happened. In the other Jesus movies, all hell breaks loose with nobody really noticing anything and the guard being severely overwhelmed. The next flaw happens when Peter denies Jesus. Peter is scared that he will die and denies him in the spur of the moment, then realizes his sin after the third deny. In this, Peter is looking at Jesus the whole time. Bible stuff aside, what a cruel thing to do. Peter was Jesus' best friend, so there's no way that happened the way it did here. Roma Downey also plays a poor Virgin Mary and all she does is unrealistic. These flaws are too big to ignore and diminish the scenes' values.The resurrection bit was very well done, letting the movie end on a high note. Kudos to them. But everything before could have been better. Not sure how everything was edited (if it was all newly filmed or taken from the series), but I can't say enough how poor the pre-Palm Sunday bit was. And all the significant flaws that happened post-Palm Sunday were easily avoidable. Luckily, there are redeeming qualities that are relatable and make this a worthy watch. Ownable? No, but see this at least once. 6.5/10
