A brilliant film that helped define a genre

Tayyab Torres

Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.

A clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.

This is the best Spiderman film to have come out since Spiderman 2 but it isn't better than the first two films in my opinion. Nevertheless it's a good movie. This is one of the funniest Spiderman movies and takes a more comedic and high school movie vibe which does fit Spiderman very well of course. The action scenes aren't anything special and I've forgotten basically all of them but the dialogue scenes are great and funny, the ending as well is priceless.Michael Keaton as the Vulture is pretty good and one of the best MCU villains. Spiderman himself is good although the suit does have the Stark Tech upgrades which do take away from the original feeling Spiderman has in a way since he made his own suit originally. This does feel just like any other MCU movie overall as it has a really generic story and no real visual style or directorial style but it's still an entertaining watch and saved Spiderman from the awful Amazing Spiderman 2. This is my third favourite Spiderman film.

I almost stopped watching this after the first 10 minutes. I thought where the hell did they dig this actor up? Immature, silly and just plain annoying, I did decide to keep going and see what would transpire.I'm a fan of the original Spider Man movies with Toby MaGuire. I never saw the ones that followed afterward so I can't talk about the other actor who portrayed the legendary Super-Hero.Other users talk about how Spider-Man played by Tom Cameron is the youngest actor to play the role. Physically not so much. He doesn't strike me as any younger looking than Toby MaGuire looked in the very first Spider-Man movie.. After all Peter Parker is still a high school kid, but it's his lack of maturity and his personality that makes him appear younger than any other Peter Parker/Spider-Man we've seen. Perhaps they should have titled this Spider-Boy cause he's a far cry from a man.As for the acting. The acting was very good. Robert Downey Jr. was great as he always is and as for Michael Keaton. For me Michael Keaton who plays Adrian Toomas/Vulture and who was the original from the early Batman movies and who remains my favorite. I never cared for the other actors in that role. He was great in this movie as well..Up to the first 15 minutes of this film though, I kept waiting for something fun, or exciting to happen. Finally at 16 minutes in I got my wish. Tom Cameron once in the role of Spider-Man was a bit more bearable. When he rescues an owner of a grocery store after fighting some crooks dressed as "the Avengers" who attempted to rob the place, he brings the store owner outside and also has the owner's cat in his arms. He got points from me, for rescuing the furry feline. This movie picks up, I've read after the last Avengers movie where Spider-Man comes to Tony Stark's aid (didn't see that movie). So in this movie he is pretty much obsessed with doing another job for Tony Stark and The Avengers. But in the meantime he does his thing of fighting the bad guys, restoring the peace etc. Everyone around him though including his guard/chaperone, a guy named "Happy" played by Jon Favreau, treats him like a rather annoying kid, and even many of his high school peers who don't realize he's really Spider-Man and make fun of him. But his closest friend Ned played by Jacob Batalon, one night finds out who he really is. The biggest surprise in this movie was how they portrayed Aunt May. Instead of a rather grand motherly looking older type they portrayed her as a much younger woman with sex appeal. This did not make sense at all to me. Even give the fact that Peter Parker is only 15 in this movie and in the original, he was a high school senior at 17. Still in 2 years his Aunt wouldn't have aged that much. So they basically changed it totally for this movie. The SFX were great in the movie as to be expected. The scene involving the rescue at the Washington Monument was exciting and awesome. And the little miniature spider "Droney", a flying interrogation robot was cute and cool. And Spidey's biggest help is from the computerized voice that's part of the program in his suit. He names her "Carrie," but sometimes she is too literal. asking him frequently, whenever a bad guy is identified, if he wants her to engage "Instant kill switch." :)There was more humorous moments too. When the guy who's been selling the high tech weapons gives Spidey a couple tips after he seals the guys trunk, as Spider-Man is racing away the guy asks if he's going to fix his trunk, that he has ice cream in there. Spider-Man says, "You deserved that! You deserved that, you're a criminal!"What's funny too is that Spider-Man is referred to by some of the bad guys as "Spider-guy."Another thing is, as in other Spider-Man movies the police still view Spider-Man as a threat and often get in his way even with all the help he's given them. It's the people who view Spider-Man and the other super forces as heroes. The ending is spectacular, and more surprises in store, which some of them complicate matters but at that point I was glad that I continued watching. I highly recommend this movie if you can get past the first 10 minutes as I did, you just might find it fun and entertaining.
