Not sure how, but this is easily one of the best movies all summer. Multiple levels of funny, never takes itself seriously, super colorful, and creative.

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

Youngblood Priest (Trevor Jackson) is a cocaine kingpin in Atlanta. He has done well because he is smart and lays low. He wants that one more big score, one that will expand his business and take risks of being exposed. And that causes all kind of problems. In the film Priest is described as "Morris Day" looking, and responds "Who is Morris Day?" with an expletive. In comparison to the original this one is more vulgar and the music wasn't that great, except when they managed to play some of the original sound track. Perhaps an unintentional statement on society. Without a character named "Snow" it is not a realistic Atlanta drug film. If you are looking for another bad guy protagonist, this is it. Killing, drug use, and strippers. Guide: F-word, sex, and nudity.

I liked the original Super Fly, it's considered a blaxploitation classic. The movie had a lot of style and a killer soundtrack and I can see the cultural impact it had. This modern remake does the original justice in many ways. This new portrayal of Priest is just as stylish and cool, and even more of a badass with his new fighting skills. He even looks like the original actor quite a bit. The soundtrack for this movie is also really good and there are some pretty cool action scenes. However, none of it is groundbreaking and there isn't much new here that the original didn't already do. While I appreciated that the movie had a couple of twists and wasn't a complete rehash of the original, it's a story that's been seen many times before. Overall, I suppose it's good this was made to introduce the iconic character of Priest to a newer generation, but this movie is pretty much an extended cut of a rap music video, which for me wasn't such a bad thing.

This is decent-reboot, Trevor Jackson gives a solid performance as "Priest" trying to get out the drug game but wanting to do one more big job before....retiring. The film looks good, it is very polished/glitzy with a hip-hop soundtrack ,it moves at a decent pace, violence/action, a little comedy, just like he original, I wish the writing was better, i believe this movie was intended for the new generation of moviegoers unfortunately, they were not born when the original film was released and the movie trailer left much to be desired/understood. In overall, a solid film- Superfly will most likely fare better on cable, digital release and movie streaming outlets.

There are chunks of this that are not well directed or edited, and there's a part halfway through where the movie just stops, like screeching to a halt, so that "Director X" can stage a music video where Priest has a threesome with his polyamorous(?) ladies in the shower (sure it's sexy and a good song, but it was something out of another movie, like a sleazy 90s Cinemax one). But.... The second half gets things to a slightly more topical area involving crooked cops (though it might have been even more creative if they hadnt been *that* corrupt, just your average racist white pigs), the drama picks up and the filmmaking embraces some of the schlockier beats (a car chase through a park has an astonishingly funny ending). It also sunk in as the movie went on how many actors are really trying and taking this as seriously as they can - Michael K Williams and Jason Mitchell for sure, and Jennifer Morrison is having more fun than I've seen her have in a long time - while Trevor Jackson does fine, no more or less, as well as Youngblood Priest the "Superfly" (not amazing OMG career-breakthrough, certainly not bad at all). Oh, and the last five minutes of this almost makes me want to whole-heartedly recommend this - I regret not seeing this in a predominantly black theater (or not during a sparsely attended matinee) just for the reactions - but it is still cheesy AF and the "Snow Patrol" opposition gangbangers are total Saturday morning cartoon characters. How it compares with the original? It's been a while since I saw that one, which is definitely no classic (it's rightfully best remembered for Mayfields great great songs and score), so I suppose... On par? 5.5/10THREE DAYS LATER: nah, the original is better.
