This is one of the few movies I've ever seen where the whole audience broke into spontaneous, loud applause a third of the way in.

It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

I liked the movie Surf's Up because of the original documentary style in which the story was presented. The superb animation and the relaxed dialogue made me feel like I was watching a "real" documentary. It's a bit slow, and there's plenty of potty humor, but it is worth a watch.

I don't care how many penguin animation movies are out there. After all we have a lot of movies with humans and they are great as long as the story is a good one.It is a bit confusing though why penguins were chosen for this one. Surfing somewhere in Hawaii, penguins, really? Seems another species would be more fitting. But whatever let's go with penguins. The story is not original. Any adult watching it will know how it ends and what happens next. For the kids though who are the main target of the movie it can be pretty original. And it shows some good lessons. Although I am not sure showing kids that winning isn't important is that good. Sure, friends are more important than trophies. But achieving one's goal deserves a reward. And kids should know it before they get out into competitive world. The animation was alright. When it came to water it was great. All the waves and at some point there were even little drops on the camera, that is supposed to be a documentary camera from the movie. This was really good. The voices are also very good. I enjoyed Jeff Bridges as Z, he kept on reminding me of his Dude in The Big Lebowsky. The humor is really not original. I think it is good for the kids but adults watching with them will just have a smile here and there. The chicken was the one funny character and at the same time he was pretty useless for the story.

First of all Thanks a lot to "Sony Pictures Animation" for great effort in this film. Why? Cause people Watch it and think sec by sec of this movie. Not only for kids but also for adults it has some great points. For the people who likes to surf and want to know some good points about surfing , i say this is the place for your motivation and skills.I watched it like 6 times. For it's great animation makes me feel the movie. The movie itself is an advise. And, of course, Our next gen. kids will be amazed by 2007's lifestyle. Shows a great difference between 90's and 21 century. Grapics and songs were very nice. Really watchable with your family.Don't go on my words. Check it out by yourself.

Cody Maverick is a surfing penguin. A documentary camera crew is following him. He tells them about the late legendary surfer Big Z who came to Antarctica when Cody was a child. He becomes the best surfer of Shiverpool. He's bullied by his bigger brother Glen and dreams of leaving the bland small town life. Reggie Belafonte organizes "the Big Z Memorial Surf Off" on Pen Gu Island. The arrogant Tank 'The Shredder' Evans is the best surfer around. Recruiter Mikey Abromowitz reluctantly takes Cody to the Surf Off. Cody befriends fellow competitor Chicken Joe and falls for lifeguard Lani Aliikai. Tank is making fun of Big Z and Cody ends up on an one-on-one challenge with Tank. Cody wipes out horribly. Lani brings him to surfing recluse Geek who teaches him important life lessons. The documentary crew is a fun conceit like the one on 'The Office'. I like the voice work especially the overlapping quality. It gives it a fun rapid-fire interaction that is missing from most animations. It also gives it a little more adult feel that distinguishes it from the other penguin cartoons. The movie generally suffers from being released 7 months after 'Happy Feet' with people having a bit of penguin fatigue. The humor is sarcastic and also a bit more adult. In general, I really like Cody and the rest of the group.
