Good start, but then it gets ruined

This film is so real. It treats its characters with so much care and sensitivity.

Not sure how, but this is easily one of the best movies all summer. Multiple levels of funny, never takes itself seriously, super colorful, and creative.

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.

I love this movie. Normally I avoid romantic comedies as I find too many rely on worn out gags and tropes. But The Decoy Bride is an exception. David Tennant is very believable as a writer in over his head with his gorgeous Hollywood actress bride-to-be. Alice Eve portrays Lara beautifully as someone who knows she's famous but isn't a bad diva. Kelly Macdonald is funny, charming and her accent is fantastic. The story is sweet, with lots of funny setups that flow nicely from one scene to the next. The characters of the island are perfect for setting the tone of a island with only 75 inhabitants. If you are looking for a good love story with a lot of funny situations that isn't sickly sweet or sappy, look no further than The Decoy Bride.

A-lister Lara Tyler (Alice Eve) refuses to marry author James Arber (David Tennant) while the paparazzi continue to hound them. Lara's people decide the castle on Hegg Island in Scotland, the subject of James' book, would be the perfect isolated location for the wedding. Unfortunately, James is a fake, and his book has a little accuracy problem. Katie (Kelly Macdonald) is an island native spinster. She is reluctantly hired as a decoy bride to distract the paparazzi.Alice Eve is over the top frantic. Kelly Macdonald is lovely. And this is without a doubt a silly rom-com. The major problem is that there is so many fake premises. Luckily I like the actors. They're not horrible characters. It's certainly fine to like the characters as they bumble their way thru this movie.

I sought this movie out for the chance to see Kelly MacDonald in a starring role. Part of what helped me get into it was the setting. Never having been to any part of Europe, I enjoyed the scenery and the depiction of life on the island.Kelly really was the main attraction as far attraction as far as I was concerned. No one else really stood out, although Tennent came close. I felt like the locals were a little too quirky, like so many other Euro films about small communities, and I also had problems with Kelly's character. I was disappointed to see her playing a girl who was so defeated by a breakup and put so much emphasis on not being popular with men. I think what I enjoyed more than anything was just listening to her accent. That and the Hebrides (which I guess they didn't actually film in, but suspension of belief and all that). Not a great romantic comedy or strong story, but nice to look at.

Sure it follows the standard formula of all romantic comedy films but, while I'm a fan of Romcoms and always hope they're going to be really good I find they almost never are. Unfortunately most of them score about a 3 (just watchable with a few good scenes or funny moments) down to -10 (complete waste of time). "The Decoy Bride" is a real treat. Especially if you're a Kelly MacDonald fan. Rest of cast is good too. Written by the wonderful comedian Sally Phillips who co-stars with Neil Jaworski and starring David Tennant. Excellent chick flick but a great in-home date night movie rental with your male significant other (unless he's a Vin Diesel fan in which case don't bother). You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll thank yourself for checking this movie out.
