Truly Dreadful Film

Brendon Jones

It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

I came to this film with low expectations and what can I say, I chuckled a few times and rather enjoyed this stoner/slacker modernist take of a medieval adventure.Danny McBride (Thadeous) and James Franco (Fabious) are two princes on a dangerous mission to save their land and rescue Fabious's fiancée Zooey Deschanel (Belladonna.)Older brother Fabious has always been valiant. Thadeous prefers booze, weed and easy maidens. When it comes to combat he tends to stay back. Joined by Natalie Portman (Isabel) a warrior with her own agenda they go on a journey where they meet evil wizards, vanquish terrifying creatures and treacherous knights. This is a silly low brow film with a penchant for a lot of penis jokes and other smutty type of humour. Its not quite Monty Python. Everyone speaks in cod English accents and seem to enjoy themselves including Portman who had recently won a Best Actress Oscar when she made this film. Franco comes across as a bit vacant though. The humour is hit and miss but there is nothing wrong with some hearty, naughty silliness.

Your Highness (2011): Dir: David Gordon Green / Cast: Danny McBride, James Franco, Natalie Portman, Zooey Deschanel, Justin Theroux: Stoner comedy set in medieval times. It regards authority and self importance. James Franco plays the successful brother who slays the cyclops. Danny McBride is the other brother and seen as a disappointment. Franco is about to wed the woman whom he saved from an evil wizard until the wizard appears and steals her away. Apparently she is a virgin and he must penetrate her. Central plot has the brothers quest to rescue her as well as the various stupid subplots that they become involved in. Heavy emphasis is given to the fact that director David Gordon Green previously made The Pineapple Express but that comedy did a better job at making fun of its subject matter than this one does. The visual effects and production work but the cast is at odds with the material. McBride can be a funny guy but here he seems only satisfied with profane comebacks and vulgarity. We know that he will prove himself but he never proves himself to the audience. Franco is hot after an Oscar nomination and he couldn't be any worse if he tried. And what is Natalie Portman doing here? She plays a female warrior and she looks incredibly fetching in her outfit but after winning the Oscar for Black Swan, she seems out of place here. Zooey Deschanel spends much of the film chained up, perhaps to keep her from fleeing the set. Justin Theroux also had too much free time and picked doing this film over boredom. It doesn't even succeed in making fun of the genre. Instead it is as embarrassing as the hero. Score: 3 / 10

Fabious (James Franco) is the heroic perfect son of King Tallious. Thadeous (Danny McBride) is the pathetic lazy brother. After defeating the evil wizard Leezar (Justin Theroux), Fabious proposes to marry the virgin Belladonna (Zooey Deschanel) who he rescued from a tower. Fabious's Knights Elite led by Boremont (Damian Lewis) ridicules Thadeous. Julie (Toby Jones) is a courtier. When Belladonna is kidnapped by Leezar, Thadeous is forced to go on the quest with Fabious. On the way, they are rescued by the skilled fighter Isabel (Natalie Portman) who agrees to travel together.Danny McBride is a little too mean-spirited. It's good that he's pathetic. It's off-putting for him to be so bitter. I feel like there is a missing element in the comedy group. It needs a goofy fun guy that somebody like Seth Rogen could play. There is a lightness that is missing from this comedy. The jokes are adolescent but workable and sometimes even funny. The addition of Natalie Portman is good but she comes in after around half of the movie is over. Her best quality is to be the straight man calling out McBride. She improves the group dynamics markedly. I want her in the movie earlier. I just think that something is missing from the Franco McBride pairing.

I don't mind silly, parities for other movies or similar movie plots, but this was the most stupid, vulgar, and distasteful movie I have ever seen. There was nothing funny about it, just plain bad taste.I know there are men who said they liked it, but I don't know any men or women that would find this movie at all to their liking... except immature post adolescents to still snicker at jokes about sex, private parts, masturbation, or using the "f" word every other word even if it makes sense or not. Topics such as rape, beastiality and betrayal of friends and family is no joking matter and I find absolutely NO HUMOR in them at all.
