    Memorable, crazy movie

    Nayan Gough

A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in a very long time. You have to go and see this on the big screen.

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

This is one of those things that have been done before but that King does in a way that you might not expect. Having read Shirley Jackson's book that this was inspired by, and knowing how King likes to play his movies/TV shows/mini series, I am still always amazed at how spooked out I get with Rose Red.It is long, but you won't regret it. Great acting, spooky house, and a creepy backstory make this one of my favorites. There are snarky comments, and for those die-hard King fans, references and similarities to other beloved stories. Enjoy!!!

Rose Red has been one of my favorite works in the horror/mystery genre for a long time. A group of people with psychic abilities, hired and led by a parapsychology professor, set out to investigate the abandoned historical mansion of Rose Red, but things begin to take a dangerous turn. Seems like an overplayed scenario, right? Certainly not! For a start, the film is incredibly atmospheric, a true masterpiece in the field of psychological horror. Most importantly, as is usually the case with the works of Stephen King, the characters are far from perfect and flawless. They carry their own personalities, history and problems that actually make them human. In this mini series mainly focused on the paranormal, you will surely recognize timeless people and issues. Not for a single minute of the 4-hour long plot will you feel tired, as all the film's details gradually build up an amazing story. Strongly recommended to all fans of the genre who haven't yet come across it.

This gets one point from me only because there should be some honor in being the worst King film/series. Most are terrible, so that takes some doing. 'Rose Red', though, knocks it out of the park. The characters are cartoons, all of them. The setting is absurd; a vast estate in SEATTLE no one gets near? Then, rather than go for suspense, the story goes for outlandish effects as soon as the cast enters the place. I had a hard time keeping up with the idiocy, but...the ridiculous mother arrives on the scene so, in this house BLATANTLY filled with malice, the psychics think it's a good idea to tie her up and leave her in the kitchen? The girl with the amazing powers can also broadcast music out of flowers? The reader who, very aware of the evil, says, "I'm never alone; Jesus is with me," and heads off on her own in a madhouse? What actually points up the essence of this unintentional comedy is King's cameo as a pizza guy. Like the movies, it's embarrassingly horrible.

I do not understand how Rose Red can have received any positive reviews at all, and yet there seem to be many. ROSE RED IS A TERRIBLE FILM. IT WILL WASTE SEVERAL HOURS OF YOUR LIFE. If you are a person who liked it, you need to have your head examined. I suggest you go to a neurologist without delay. This film is a travesty. A long and dull tale of the most terrible team of psychic investigators ever spending the weekend in a haunted house. Wow, how original. I wonder what will happen... will there be ghosts? Will they scare and even kill people? Maybe if there was a bit less plot exposition and continual pointless detractors ( such as academic rivalry, overbearing mothers, romance between people with no chemistry, etc. ) we might have a chance to get involved in the drama or tension of knowing whats about to happen. However, the characters, which are totally shallow and act in a completely retarded fashion throughout the film, are even worse than the lame plot. THe acting takes the cake as the most excremental aspect of this 4 hour waste of time. Nancy Travis makes every scene she is in unwatchable by constantly grinning and showing off her ugly teeth, not to mention acting like a bitch for 4 entire hours of torture. The other actors are pretty awful as well, giving empty performances, though who can blame them when the script is so unintelligent it seems like King wrote it while he was either drunk or operating heavy machinery. Wow. So bad I can hardly believe it and I could not bring myself to continue watching it, but had to stop half way through after getting a pain in my neck from too much cringing.I can stand a lot of crap when I watch a film and I hate not seeing the end, but this was unbearable. Rose Red has no redeeming value, even as material for mockery.
