Don't listen to the negative reviews

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

It's a shame that "The Last Movie Star" didn't get much of a theatrical release, because that means it will almost certainly be looked over at Oscar time next year. The Oscar worthy work on this movie goes to veteran actor Burt Reynolds. Yes, it's true that in this movie he is more or less playing a version of his true persona and career. But Reynolds all the same gives a full performance, one that shows multiple dimensions of his character. He isn't even afraid to show a dark and sometimes unlikable side to his character. As for the other aspects of the movie, like the direction and the screenplay, I will admit that a number of times the story plays out in a somewhat predictable manner. But all the same, it doesn't come across as cliched or really dumb; you will believe that the events of this movie could play in real life as they do in this movie. While I wouldn't say that this movie is some modern day classic, it's a solid effort by everyone involved, and everybody involved should be proud of the end results. Good job!

This is a great movie that takes you away from the action and opinion most Hollywood movies consist of. To have a Hollywood Movie Star the lead character is all that was needed from them, and Mr. Reynolds is possibly the best choice of the positive never give up attitude America needs more of. As technology is better used, movies like this will be the norm for an hour and a half get away. Great acting, and great directing. A nod for Chevy Chase also.

I really, really, enjoyed this film. I was a teenager when Burt Reynolds was at his pinnacle. There was no one "cooler" or more charismatic than this movie star. His appearances on Carson are legendary. He was funny, charming, and unbelievably good looking. His wit and self-deprecating humor endeared him to the masses. I know this is certainly not autobiographical, because Burt is still working, but I have to say I fully connected with what Adam Rifkin was creating. I found the acting and story telling wonderful. The interaction with the the Vic of today with his matinee idol self in some of his older movies was perfection. I've been reading both user's and critic's reviews of this film and I have to say if you are not of a "certain age" you're really not going to fully get it.
