Too many fans seem to be blown away

Did you people see the same film I saw?

It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

If you're interested in the topic at hand, you should just watch it and judge yourself because the reviews have gone very biased by people that didn't even watch it and just hate (or love) the creator. I liked it, it was well written, narrated, and directed and it was about a topic that interests me.

I've seen so many people talk about this film in a negative light....but they're all wrong! This is the greatest movie ever made! Casablanca and Citizen Kane ain't got nuthin on this SH*T! I mean, the actors are SO believable in their performances, and i'm so surprised that they aren't in any other movies! The monster itself looks amazing, and it makes movies like Cloverfield or Godzilla look like fake clay puppets. The camera work is also amazing, and the random effects added in make the camera work even better, making everyone look like they're actually there! This is definitely the best movie ever made! Or.....it's a giant piece of Tyrannosaur dookie. Also, it's a rip off of Cloverfield....just wanted you to know. However, i actually do have two uses for this movie 1. As a piece of toilet paper 2. As a sleep aid (it's so boring you're probably not going to make it through without falling asleep or skipping through)

Very rarely is there a film that comes out with ABSOLUTELY NOTHING redeemable about it. Even garbage like transformers 2 has one scene that at least makes it look like one part of got it right (even for one second), and even batman and robin is so bad its hilarious. This movie just has absolutely nothing to it, not even as a riffing movie with friends over a beer, its just that bad. The monster isn't even shown for a good glance, and when you do its so generic, acting so bad you actually feel sorry for the actors involved, and it doesn't show its budget. And it wasn't even 1 million dollars. Do yourself a favor, don't waste your time on this, watch something worthwhile or just take a nap. Its just a waste of time

I watched this because it was on Netflix and I was bored. The synopsis given by Netflix seemed decent, so I gave it a shot. The movie was just unwatchable. It was boring the entire way through and the acting is beyond terrible. It is seriously a movie about two women (in their late 20's?) who run around with the worlds worst camera. The movie uses the normal mockumentry features of the camera being shaky and some video being garbled...but this film overdoes it. The camera seems to go black, freeze footage, have pixilation, almost the entire way through. It is as though the filmmakers believed that video cameras in 2003 were not good for anything more than a paperweight. The film has numerous factual errors in it that could have been avoided with 5 seconds of research. My favorite is the characters referring to uploading the video to "Youtube" despite youtube not being founded when the movie was supposed to be taking place. The film starts bad, stays bad, and ends bad. There is nothing in it that gets "better" no matter how hopeful you try to be.

Even though this movie was a total ripoff of Cloverfield, I was still drawn in by the setup. Two girls are visiting Japan to conduct some interviews for some activist group. While filming, they are caught in an earthquake, but some of the locals claim it is something else. They start running around the city, still filming, and we find out it is a giant monster attack. At the end of the movie, the sisters get separated, and we find out that although their footage was later discovered, the girls were never seen again. For some reason, I still like the technique popularized by The Blair Witch Project, where the movie is supposedly filmed by the characters. I know a lot of viewers hate that kind of camera work, and many even claim it gets them sick. I think maybe for me, it makes me feels more like I am transported into the action of the movie, or that what I am watching feels more raw or realistic. Rec and Paranormal Activity were two movies that used this style very effectively and kept me tense all the way through. The problem with Monster is that it never goes anywhere. It doesn't build. They didn't really have any ideas, it doesn't seem planned. Just some footage of American girls running around Japan trying to avoid the destruction. We never really see the monster, which is a big letdown (except for a swinging tentacle). And they over-stylized the camera work WAY past the point of distraction. In fact, it seems like the area of the movie that the most time was devoted to was making the footage seem damaged. Except that it was so over the top, it didn't feel the least bit natural. I won't bother to try to describe the effects they used, but it was a ridiculous combination of static and jump cuts that seem intended more to cover up the fact that they had no story than anything else. I had to kind of fast forward and skip around to get through this movie, and I won't watch it again, nor do I recommend it to anyone.
