Better Late Then Never

One of the worst ways to make a cult movie is to set out to make a cult movie.

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

Wilee (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is an underachiever bike messenger in NYC. He has issues with his girlfriend Vanessa (Dania Ramirez) who in turn is being evicted by her roommate Nima(Jamie Chung) and she is being hit on by Wilee's work mate Manny (Wolé Parks).Wilee likes to ride and is reckless. Once we get some quick character introductions, Wilee has to pick up a message from Nima...a premium rush, and deliver it in China Town. There is a policeman (Michael Shannon) with a gambling debt that is attempting to intercept the message.The plot is straight forward with no twists. Most of the film is bike riding. The film starts out as a flashback and then gives us flashbacks within the flashback to explain plot points. I was rather bored with the whole film, but this might have a younger audience appeal.Parental guide: 1 F-bomb (why do they do that?), no sex or nudity.

Imagine you have an original idea for a movie that you are about to pitch to the umpteenth financial backer you meet. When they ask what the film is about, you say a thriller, an action-busting crime story with an odd dash of humour ...... all set on bicycles in Manhattan. Before the executives finishing laugh security kicks you out of their office. Raising finance for such an idea would be a challenge and an accomplishment in itself. Yet it happened. A visionary at Columbia Pictures took a risk. Though the movie initially made a modest loss, with worldwide sales and subsequent TV deals it thankfully turned a profit.New York boasts 1,500 bicycle dispatch riders, daily risking life and limb, hour-by-hour... hand-delivering documents across the City. In the lead role, Wiley (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) a law-school dropout prefers the harum-scarum rush of life on the road speeding past heavy traffic on two wheels. Other messengers use brakes, Wiley has none, and he never stops at junctions. We see his imagination work overtime (in CGI) to instantly decide the best paths to avoid fatal accidents, or injury. Vanessa (Diana Ramirez) his girlfriend is also a messenger, and we intrude on their relationship as it falls on rocky ground. They converse via headsets while zipping about town, arguing. Enter Vanessa's flatmate Nima (Jamie Chung). She has a deeply important personal issue, and entrusts a valuable envelope to Wiley to be delivered to Chinatown within two hours. The contents of that package also concern corrupt detective Monday (Michael Shannon), who will go to any lengths to retrieve it, however illegal or brutal. Shannon plays the dirty cop very convincingly, always ready to lie, intimidate or assault those standing in his way. He must obtain the envelope before 7pm, or else his life is in jeopardy. Basically that's the plot. Can Wiley deliver? What is so vital to Nima about the envelope? And why is the NYPD cop so intent on doing anything to obtain it for himself?The story plays out with crazy complications, cops on bikes chasing messengers, and stunt after stunt on the streets. Many stunt crew were involved, some of whom were injured during filming as was lead star Gordon-Levitt.. the daring action is relentless. Detective Monday is increasingly desperate and in their efforts to elude him our heroes take ever more perilous risks. If this feature movie was only about the adrenalin rush it could be boring. During slower moments Wiley and Vanessa warm to each other. The repartee between messengers is authentic, as is camaraderie between them all, a genuine fraternity. Sporadic humour adds to the interaction. The cyclists look the part, lean athletes forever on the move. But it's Nima who, in a very surprising twist, steals the show. Her secret issue lends pathos key to the plot. All-in-all this film is original. How many adrenalin-thumping thrillers have been made before about city dwellers on bicycles? None! Though in truth this isn't a cinematic masterpiece, because this film is unique I heartily recommend you watch.

It is like that book that which you pick up, you cant put down, not even for a second, until you finish it. Except in this case, you cant even look right or left or you miss an important happening. This movie doesn't have a single boring scene! The reason most people have given it a low rating must be because of the simple story, but sometimes a simple story is told with such suspense and artistry, that it makes a movie "perfect". The acting, of course, is flawless too. Another reason why I think people must have given it a low rating must be because it may seem a bit unrealistically childish at some points, but then there was no line put at the start of the movie claiming that the story narrated is a true-life story. I think, it is a different movie and is so grasping, while being so simple.

Premium Rush has a simple premise which with the help of director and screenwriter David Koepp develops into something that will keep you thrilled for the next 90 minutes. The movie deals with the story of Wilee played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who is a bike messenger, whose troubled journey begins after he receives an envelope which of course he'll have to deliver, but during this journey of his,he'll meet with some complications along the way. The movie is a thrilling ride from the start to finish, happening almost in real time, almost, because there are a few flashbacks and a few moments that are happening from Wilee's POV, that are offering the movie some comic relief. There are long chase scenes that are well done and they are keeping your heart beat at a high rate. The events in the movie are happening very fast, when you hoped that you'll finally get a moment in which you can catch your breath, Wilee gets in other troubles. Sometimes these troubles are meeting, so they aren't there just for the sake of adding some extra screen time, each character having a purpose in the movie. Michael Shannon does a terrific as he always does and the other supporting cast also does a good job, helping a lot to keep the movie even more energetic. The only problem of the movie are the flashbacks, that are telling the back story of some characters, which aren't as compelling as the rest of the movie, most of them already being familiar, despite this the movie really succeeds in making the characters lovable, due to the actors good job as it was mentioned before. The final of the movie is compelling, each character getting what he or she deserved after such a long ride. This movie is advisable for those who like action packed movies, not the Michael Bay types, but the more grounded ones like this, the movies that are aiming on immersing the viewer with its story and thrills, rather than just with enormous set pieces and flying CGI monsters or robots or flying CGI robot monsters.
