Such a frustrating disappointment
if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.
View MoreThe first must-see film of the year.
It is interesting even when nothing much happens, which is for most of its 3-hour running time. Read full review
View MoreThis is not a great movie by any means, you can tell that within the first 2 minutes of viewing, yet as many times as I thought, I really need to shut this off, there was just something about it. Ultimately I managed to stick with it until the end.I liked the cast which helped. Everyone involved was familiar to me, and (for whatever reason?) giving their best to a B-grade mess. Faces among the team include; James Cromwell, Sean Bean, Ving Rhames -with a decent African accent, Dominic Monaghan and Freddy Rodriguez.'Soldiers' is also a bit of a throwback film to the action movies of the 1980's which was fun; lots of big bright explosions, excess of bullets which never hit the good guys and always find their mark first time on the bad guys who usually fall off something, along with a body count (to the faceless bad guy army) of epic proportions. The story follows Captain Craig McKenzie, (Christian Slater) a former U.S special forces soldier (and user of the cool Captain Kirk roll) who is hired to protect a group of wealthy people wanting to experience the thrills of actual military affairs and warfare. The misfit team of millionaires get more than they bargained for when the "fake" mission becomes real, trapping them in enemy territory.Ultimately this is a one of those perfect hangover films, as in I can't get off the couch and don't want to think too hard. Oh and the closing credits are super awesome with hard rock music and in your face exploding pictures of the cast. 8/7/15
View MoreThis is one ludicrously silly movie and not really in a good way. The basic story is rather silly to start with. A bunch of rich people with zero combat experience and huge egos gets themselves inserted into a combat situation for thrills. The "company" providing the service is actually a bunch of rebels trying to fund their operations. As I said rather silly. As an action comedy it could have worked though.Unfortunately the implementation is equally ridiculous. It is obvious that the director is as null on actual military operations as the rich thrill-seekers in the movie. Already the first action sequences were the, supposedly skilled captain McCenzie is introduced, are downright laughable with the captain running around like a monkey shooting people left right and center. The film, unfortunately, continues very much in this style. There is not a shred of realism or meaningful story in the entire movie. There are some fun or otherwise enjoyable scenes which saved my movie evening and saved this movie from getting a one-star rating but that is just barely. One of the reasons I decided to watch this movie was due to actors like Sean Bean and sure enough, they perform as well as can be expected with the rather louse material that they are given to work with. Not a movie that I would recommend to anyone.
View More"Soldiers of Fortune" ranks as one of Christian Slater's better straight to video releases. Freshman Russian director Maxim Korostyshevsky acquits himself with style to spare in this suspenseful, splendidly-acted, and marvelously well photographed "Expendables" clone. Slater stars as dishonorably discharged U.S. Army captain drummed out of the military for conduct unbecoming and insubordination. This represents one of Slater's better performances, and he looks like he is still in good shape with a six-pack to prove it. Korostyshevsky not only stages this noisy nonsense with verve, but also he has surrounded Slater with a first-rate villain and a solid supporting cast. Colm Meaney of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" makes a thoroughly loathsome villain named Carter Mason, while Ving Rhames, Sean Bean, Dominic Monaghan, and James Cromwell are cast as wealthy businessmen who want to get a taste of combat. Okay, scenarists Robert Crombie, Alexandre Coscas, and Joe Kelbley created an occasionally overcomplicated narrative, especially when a couple of people looking to hire our hero and test him during a poker game. Eventually, a reluctant James Craig McKenzie decides to take these people up and brings in his best friend to help him put a quintet of millionaires through a boot camp before they invade Snake Island and take on a mad dictator, Colonel Lupo, and his bodyguard Carter Mason. Sure, the credibility of "Soldiers of Fortune" is called into question several times based on the behavior of the heroes. Nevertheless, a surprise or two occurs. This actioneer is one of Slater's better ones.
View MoreDesperately seeking some form of entertainment, I rented this rubbish from a Redbox. I'm a huge fan of military-themed movies and figured with Christian Slater and Sean Bean (2 halfway-decent actors) this would be worth watching.Boy was I wrong. Right from the beginning you can see that Slater is not cut out to play a hard-gritted special forces soldier. This poor casting decision ruined the movie from the beginning.Slater's uniform was also a joke. But, not as funny as the scene where he runs into an open field and picks off several "Taliban" (they looked like characters from an Arab spoof comedy) with a Call of Duty assault rifle. Please save yourself the dollar and time of this worthless junk.Rob
