It's hard to see any effort in the film. There's no comedy to speak of, no real drama and, worst of all.

By the time the dramatic fireworks start popping off, each one feels earned.

This is a gorgeous movie made by a gorgeous spirit.

The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

This is about a guy in high school who gets asked to the prom by a girl but he turns her down because he's already seeing someone else. Turns out he turned the wrong girl down.I don't mind gore and I don't mind psycho killer films, though they aren't my favorite horror flavor. I just don't like films that are so, so, slow and drawwwwwn out. I ended up fast forwarding this around the 50-minute mark just to get to the interesting bits and then on to the ending. I couldn't put up with it anymore. There are good bits and funny bits and the acting is okay for the most part, but I found the in-between bits so irritatingly boring and a drawn out snoozefest of artistic and pretentious film-making. In short - it did my head in!I've given this a generous 4/10. I wanted to give it 2/10 but I thought I would have been rating it with my emotions rather than with an objective mind. I honestly think the 6.7 rating for this is far too high, but then, that's only my opinion. A lot of people really seem to like this film.

Simply Put

I would never have picked this film, had it not been recommended by someone. The picture on the poster makes it look very teeny-boppy, and thus wishy-washy. If you get past that and watch the trailer, you might think that it looks a bit fantastical/artsy, or even torture porn. All of this would have put me off watching it if I came across it on IMDb by chance. But the person who recommended it to me insisted that The Loved Ones was none of these things, and that since I like a proper scary film, I would like this - they were right! There are very violent acts perpetrated in this film, but the vast majority of them are not acted out on screen - you just feel the panic in the build up, and see the terrible aftermath. It is not gratuitous, nor does it feel 'sick' at any point - just frightening. I felt genuinely panicky for the main character/victim, and was really, really rooting for him. I usually enjoy a bit of a grim ending where the bad guy wins, and don't really mind if main characters die. But in this film the 2 baddies are just so awful, I was desperate for them to lose! The situation that unfolds really is the stuff of nightmares, and the victim is not stupid and doesn't act like a horror-himbo. The 2 baddies are terrifying in their madness - the actress that plays the lead female is absolutely superb. She makes a brilliant, believable psycho! The film doesn't wade too much in to backstories, or try to come up with a method/reason for the baddies madness, which I like. It doesn't waste time in this respect, or have unbelievable scenes where the baddies reveal their motives a-la-Scooby-Doo! They're just a pair of evil nutters. However, I have knocked 2 points off because I feel that the sub-plot, to do with the main character's best friend, was totally irrelevant to the rest of the film. I do not understand why that was there. I did not care for the characters involved, it had no impact on the main events or outcome, to which it was flimsily connected. Shame. But overall, I highly recommend if you are looking for a good fright-in!

I really do hope someone had as much fun making this, as I did watching it. The loved ones puts it's own spin on the teen horror cliché that has been made over and over again in the last fifteen years. From the moment the film begins, it only tells what you need to know; instead of dwelling on the characters relationships that are really just factors in the movie's later overall presentation. It does come to a rough start, however. Nothing that will take more than ten minutes of screen-time, but some segments regarding prom are unnecessary to say at the least (the best friend). Once it takes off, The loved ones is a triumph for it's genre. A horror movie can only be as good, if it's still a good movie when you're not scared. In this particular instance I was not, but instead I was baffled at the horror I was presented. The loved ones treats it's lead, Brent, as the source of the story; you the viewer sees what Brent sees, and that's where the story comes into it's own. It's fun, self-aware, and in some of it's best minutes of screen time, it was realistic. I give it a 8.6, rounding to a 9.

I've seen a lot of horror films and I swear, none so far was disgusting until I decided to watch this movie! It was very dark and hideous, it actually reminded me a bit of Carrie like how the girl Lola was denied from Brent on saying no to being his date for prom. It was very creepy, disturbing and destroying to know that her father got involved in her horrific actions. He must've sexually abused her as a child, no wonder she is messed up but if that was the case, then she should know how deeply wrong that trying to kill someone is cruel. I would love to know this girls back story in the film! Especially her poor mother, god what has they done to her?! I was very surprised to see there was no police in this but only a police car which made no sense to me! At least Brent survived and went back to Holly. Of course, Lola being killed for being a monster...
