Don't listen to the Hype. It's awful

Humbersi

The first must-see film of the year.

Quiet Muffin

This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.

All these people leaving these killer wonderful reviews must be plants...people that worked on the film, because I've seen news clips scarier than this film.Such an absolute snooze fest that I had to keep rewinding because I'd get so bored, I'd tune out and miss parts.I didn't miss anything, actually. And the fact that the killers are kids, is supposed to be scary? Please. What a colossal waste of time. The ONLY reason I gave this movie a 2, is because the brat at the beginning got what she deserved and the country Manor was pretty cool.If you're looking for scary or even creepy...avoid this borefest!!

Often associated with the New French Extremity movement which is responsible for some of the most disturbing horror flicks of 21st century cinema (Inside, Martyrs & High Tension), Them (also known as Ils) may not feature the same level of brutality that the aforementioned examples pack in but it still works as an incessantly tense, gripping & stimulating work of its genre.Supposedly based on real events, the story of Them follows a young couple who live a peaceful life in an isolated country house but are woken by strange noises one night. What transpires next is a dreadful night of unrelenting terror as they find themselves being tormented by what appears to be a group of hooded assailants who are after their lives for no apparent reason whatsoever.Directed by David Moreau & Xavier Palud, the film sets its tone & establishes a suspenseful aura right within its opening segment that also serves as an indication of more sinister things to come. The plot is a simple home-invasion thriller template but what still turns it into an edge-of-the-seat experience is its foreboding atmosphere that is effectively sustained from start to finish. The mystery of the attackers is another element that keeps the interest alive. The entire movie is set in a remote real estate and this isolation brings an anxiety of its own. The images are grainy & the camera goes all chaotic when the chips go down but it only contributes to its unsettling vibe. And as far as performances go, Olivia Bolamy captures the fear & confusion of her character with finesse. On an overall scale, Them doesn't waste a single minute of its 77 minutes runtime, expertly utilises all its resources, especially sound, to encapsulate the entire film with an unnerving ambiance, and culminates with a chilling climax that is shocking & discomforting in equal doses. A perfectly good home-invasion slasher flick that relies on its atmosphere instead of blood-filled gore to deliver the scares, Them is worth a shot.

While "Them" wasn't poorly made, I just couldn't get into it.The acting is decent and the story is your typical home-invasion affair that is pretty common in the genre of horror (and, of course, it's claim to be based on a true story) but the problem came from the fact the characters aren't really developed enough that I found myself capable of caring for them and the story is just too familiar. Additionally, the film bravely decides to opt-out of using music to cue the shocking scenes and the moments meant to scare but the editing in the film proved to be the undoing with this move because, too often, scenes went on too long and they seemed to be giving the audience time to prepare and be caught totally ON-guard for what was to come next. The film also tries to put a fresh coat of paint by twisting up the usual home-invader and the motive behind said invasion but, after watching a story that basically boils down to watching a person run, hide, look for the chaser, run again and repeat, I found myself completely unable to even be a little bit impressed or even surprised by the reveal—not to mention that how the filmmakers decide to tell you the motive behind it all was just lazy and felt like a last minute addition."Them" wasn't put together poorly and it really had some potential but these films just don't spook or scare me. So any scene that was meant to be tension-filled and suspenseful came off slow-going and boring.

The movie is a complete waste of time. I just watched it and I honestly feel furious for having wasted 70+ minutes of my life. And this comes from a guy who has seen a lot of crappy films... Unfortunately, this was by far the worst of them all! The movie is full of the "cheapest" of clichés, the characters are unbelievably stupid and their reactions are meaningless. Not to mention the fact that the twist towards the end makes things even worse. The movie's 6.5 rating is utterly inexplicable to me and it makes me wonder how this movie received such ratings. The only word that comes to mind is "garbage"! Do yourselves a favor and avoid it as h@ll.
