A Disappointing Continuation

Ketrivie

It isn't all that great, actually. Really cheesy and very predicable of how certain scenes are gonna turn play out. However, I guess that's the charm of it all, because I would consider this one of my guilty pleasures.

The film makes a home in your brain and the only cure is to see it again.

Trying to gain her psychology master, a student suffering from night terrors as well as several of her friends learn that they're being triggered by a series of attacks brought by creatures living in the shadows and must find a way of stopping them from continuing to hunt them. This was a decent if overall rather forgettable effort. Among the few things it does right here is really sell the idea of the strange creatures and their world they represent here that there's a great framework needed for horror villains. The idea of marking their prey through night terrors as a child and then coming back to collect them as adults is quite an effective idea, and the rules needed for them to become viable once again makes for a rather enjoyable creature here. From their ability to tamper with electricity by causing blackouts or surges enough to break the light altogether or the way in which they create a sense of loneliness in their attacks, it has the sort of general fear and desperation of being attacked by that kind of entity. Likewise, beyond this setup there's also the film's incredibly fun and frantic attack scenes of the creatures getting into play here as this one has some awesome scenes here, from the swimming pool encounter and his scenes in the apartment to the absolutely stellar stalking scenes in the tunnel after the train trip all being fast, frantic scenes that are much better than expected. Still, that's also what signals the start of the flaws here as these attack scenes are so haphazard and tame that there's very little appeal to the scenes as they're so bloodless and utterly devoid of any kind of true horror appreciation since they're edited to try to be chilling but can't because of the rating. Not having any kind of blood or gore in here during all these different attacks is an immensely distressing factor here by this one never really getting any kind of big effect which sells what's going on as it misses the big picture of the scenes. There's also the fact that there's such a discrepancy with the scenes here in being long, involved scenes compared to the other scenes which are fast and really crazed that it creates a really disjointed pacing of making the action scenes look good until the kills and has long, bland scenes in between them. The last flaw here is the creatures' lack of explanation for appearance here as there's never anything given about why they target the people, how they work or anything about them and it makes them far less frightening. These here are what really holds this one back.Rated PG-13: Violence, Language and Brief Nudity.

My biggest problem with this film was that every time the creatures… and there were a LOT of 'em… started swarming all over the heroine, they then just backed off and menaced her rather than eating her. Indecisive? Saving her for later? Full up from eating the other characters already? I dunno. Weird, anyway.Standard predictable jumps, with a couple of exceptions… you can see it coming a mile away most of the time, and it just isn't very scary when the movie telegraphs what it's about to do. Especially when it's something that other movies have done, much better, many times before. The cast, with one exception, was dreadful. That one exception was the actor who played Sam, the artist. Him, I liked. He had some depth and credibility. Unfortunately, he was alone in this. There were like two good lines in the whole movie, and he had both of them.In contrast to some reviewers who had a similar "meh" experience with this film, I did like the ending. In fact, I thought it was probably the most powerful part of the film. No, not just because I was glad it was over… the ending was actually quite effective. I bumped my rating up a star because of it.In sum, you really have to be in the mood for a movie like this if you're going to invest the time in it. I had a free afternoon and didn't feel like using my brain for anything, so it wasn't the worst choice I could have made. If you're looking for quality, though, look elsewhere.

OK... well this movie, like most, has ups and downs. If you do not know the story, its that a bad actress with a hideously long neck watches some emo dude kill himself. She meets the emo guys friends who share her problem and Mr. Emo guys problem- they had night terrors, or bad nightmares. The friends get killed by the sandman(metallica reference, anyone??)and they have a weird mark. Julia (the giraffe) finds her mark and fights the things. In the end, her boyfriend has her institutionalized and she is dragged to hell.OK well +'s. The effects were great. The movie was great on atmosphere and mystery, even though we see the creatures, we still wonder. The acting was OK in parts. The story and concept were great. Very Freddy-ish. The music was good in parts. Now the bad-most of the acting. You find yourself laughing at some of the acting. The music at times has you dry heaving. The stories told by characters are entertaining, but ridiculously cheesy. The script was pretty mediocre in 3/4 of this movie. Final Verdict- watch it. While stupid and somewhat cheesy, the atmosphere is amazing and the special effects are good. Entertaining as hell.

This movie was very cool. I think that it is one of Wes Craven's better films. It wasn't cheesy like 'People Under the Stairs'. It was a solid horror picture. It was suspenseful and mysterious and gave me a few scares and thrills. The concept was cool and the scenery and ambiance were eerie and creepy. It was a B movie but the quality of the film and story and acting were that of an A movie. This is a sleeper movie because a lot of people have not heard of it. It has a low rating on this site because there seems to be a lot of sci-fi and horror movie snobs on this site that prefer artsy overly intellectual movies. This is a solid horror film. I liked a lot and I recommend it to you.
