Plot so thin, it passes unnoticed.
It is a performances centric movie
Far from Perfect, Far from Terrible
This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.
View MoreA View From the Top (2003): Dir: Bruno Barreto / Cast: Gwyneth Paltrow, Christina Applegate, Candice Bergen, Mark Ruffalo, Mike Myers: Worthwhile comic drama about the climb to success. It stars Gwyneth Paltrow who dreams of becoming a first class international flight attendant. She ends up having to choose between her current relationship or moving up. By the conclusion her success does not overrule her heart. Detailed background with Paltrow's childhood then she deals with betrayal as awful truths indicate that her test scores were higher. Directed by Bruno Barreto who made the superior romantic comedy Bossa Nova. He successfully gives insight into the pursuit of a career as a flight attendant and the hard work to succeed in such an occupation. Paltrow delivers an excellent performance as a woman set on her goals but the outcome choice isn't surprising. Christina Applegate plays her best friend who steals and ultimately sacrifices her friendship and reputation. Candice Bergen is standard as an author whose book inspires Paltrow. Mark Ruffalo is also flat as Paltrow's boyfriend who is basically there to provide her with a dilemma. Mike Myers steals moments as an instructor and adds comic elements that elevate the film a notch. Although more dramatic than funny with its share of narrative problems, it does showcase hard work being rewarded. Score: 6 ½ / 10
View MoreHa, I really liked this movie. I can't particularly explain why except to say that it was fun, not completely clichéd and I guess I've always secretly wanted to be a flight attendant.I enjoyed the story here for what it was, following a girl with dreams of leaving the trailer park and becoming a first class Flight attendant. And I actually got a kick out of Gweneth Paltrow in her role as the gung-ho student destined for flight attendant greatness. She really gives it her all. Her 1970's inspired clothing, hair and changing uniforms were also super entertaining. A surprisingly decent cast attached to this; Mike Myers is hilarious as John the flight attendant trainer with dubious vision and hidden anger issues. Christina Applegate plays the backstabbing best friend with Kelly Preston, Rob Lowe as a pilot and Candice Bergen as Sally Weston the great mentor.Ultimately this turns into a bit of a romantic comedy towards the end with 'Donna' having to choose between her dream of the first class run from New York to Paris or love with Mark Ruffalo. That's a tough choice actually. 8/21/13,
View MorePlot-less. Would have been better as just straight up pornography. Just get them people to f*cking, cut out the middle man. A movie made of ghosts, one haunting after the next and all that is gained is a numb spiritual emptiness. Gwyneth Paltrow is a pretty lady, I understand, but does she really need a whole movie to herself? What story is she gonna tell me? A pretty lady struggles, a pretty lady perseveres, a pretty lady achieves? Is that really a story? If there is a love story in this, you know it's gonna work out well in the end? Don't you know that? Please tell me you know that. If this movie was a forest, I would burn it down, down to the ground.
View MoreI completely agree with the thumbs up! I have recommended this film to my mom and aunt. I happened to catch it late at night as I had not heard of the film before but liked the stars and am thrilled I saw it. My Mother worked for Pan American Airlines for 37 years. Back in the day when travel was a pleasure. This film reminds me of the day when it truly was a pleasure to travel and something to be excited about. Especially seeing what being a flight attendant meant. When working for an airline meant something to be proud of and appreciate. Something I am sorry to say no longer exists and it is truly become just another JOB.
