Truly Dreadful Film
A lot of fun.
if their story seems completely bonkers, almost like a feverish work of fiction, you ain't heard nothing yet.
View MoreWhile it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.
View MoreThe misbegotten comedy "Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins" features Martin Lawrence as a "Trash-TV" talk show host who, against his better judgment, attends a family get-together commemorating the 50th wedding anniversary of his parents (played by James Earl Jones and Margeret Avery, who are both way too classy for this enterprise). Roscoe's return leads to a seemingly endless series of conflicts and petty competitions between the citified prodigal son and his country bumpkin relatives still living back home. The performances are fun and lively - particularly by Mo'Nique, who steals the show as Roscoe's loudmouth, up-in-everybody's-grill sister - but the threadbare script, filled as it is with predictable slapstick and cloying sentimentality, rarely makes us laugh. The movie probably would have been better had it dispensed with the family reunion concept altogether and, instead, focused on satirizing Jenkins' day job. As it is, there's really nothing in Roscoe's attitude and demeanor to suggest that he has anything in common with the Jerry Springers of the world. And without that angle to distinguish the movie from every other run-of-the-mill family comedy of recent vintage, any possible interest the film might have generated dies aborning.Well worth skipping.
View MoreOK, I am not a big fan of Martin Lawrence or Cedric the Entertainer, but this looked like an interesting diversion for Saturday afternoon, and it did have Nicole Ari Parker (The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love), so what the heck. There is nothing like those family reunions where old rivalries are never settled, and everyone is trying to one-up each other.R.J. (Martin Lawrence) has always felt like a loser, and his rivalry with Clyde (Cedric the Entertainer) is the focus of his parents (James Earl Jones & Margaret Avery) 50th Anniversary get together. Even though he is engaged to Bianca (Joy Bryant), he is still in love with Lucinda (Parker), and that complicates matters. There are some great characters in this film to keep the laughs coming. Yes, I know that many of the laughs are tired stereotypes, but they are real. Michael Clarke Duncan, Mike Epps, and Mo'Nique really make this film. The fact that it stretched it's PG-13 rating to the limits didn't hurt.
View MoreRoscoe Jenkins has taken the name "RJ Stevens" and become a self-help guru with a book and talk show based on the premise "the team of me". He heads home accompanies by his self-absorbed fiancée, Bianca, who has the idea that they should record RJ's parent's 50th anniversary celebration. At home, RJ's family does not treat him as the important semi-celebrity he is in LA but as the child who could never defeat his cousin Clyde in any competition and as the boy still under his parents' dominion at home. Roscoe's relatives played by James Earl Jones. Margaret Avery, Cedric the Entertainer, Mo'nique and Michael Clarke Duncan are all funny and good at puncturing the bubble of Roscoe's believed importance. Eventually Roscoe learns some important lessons about the importance of family and remaining connected to them and becomes the man his father has always wanted him to be. This is a decent, somewhat funny movie so it gets a grade of C+ and a moderate recommendation.
View MoreWelcome Home Roscoe Jenkins was extremely funny. It was also sad at some parts in it, and can bring tears to your eyes. Some of the characters in it were very annoying and others just got you very mad. One thing they could have done better was made Roscoe Jenkins pay more attention to his son. The acting was excellent as well between all the characters. They all also got a pretty well amount of time each on the screen. The story didn't have to much to it and could have been done a lot better. For the most part all the characters they chose though did an amazing job and were all very funny. I would definitely see this movie over and over again with having to pay 7 or 8 dollars to see it. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes comedy movies you will not be disappointed. The message toward this movie was also excellent about just having fun and not always about winning, and also choosing your kid over a stupid game. All and all this was a great movie and will probably be the best comedy of the year.
