Being a huge fan of the "modern" westerns such as the Lonesome Dove trilogy, Open Range etc..... I was eagerly looking forward to this but couldn't help but feel slightly let down by the end result. Although Duval is as solid as ever everything was too slow moving and the plot development was poor. Its almost as if they didn't have enough story ideas to fill the 3 hours so kept adding in strange little scenes which lasted about 30 seconds or so....Character development was strange too.....after the end of the first episode I commented to my girlfriend that "Big Ears" was supposed to be the bad guy but they hadn't really given any reason why..... then at the start of the second he commits a bad act, almost as if they realised they needed to force something in there to make him feared......The scenery was beautiful, the acting was good by some, limited by others......I didn't really feel ANY empathy or warmth for any of the characters and on the whole it could've been much, much better.

One of the most unsung Directors of His Generation, Walter Hill delivers, once again, a most intense and gripping Movie Experience. This is a rich and rewarding Story of the West in the waning Years of the Nineteenth Century. A multi-layered Event of two Cowpokes driving a herd of Horses 800 Miles and what they encounter is both expected and unexpected. It is a Good vs Evil confrontation and the Hats are unambiguously Black and White. There is some dastardly deeds afoot and it is up to our Heroes to intervene on the side of Justice. This is an impeccably mounted Movie that is gorgeous to look at and at times things happen that make you turn away from the Horror of it all. It is a pretty Picture with some not so pretty things happening. A roughly hewn Film that is sporadically Violent with some very touching Scenes. The Story is broad and beneath it all there is a Personal feel that draws the Viewer in and is thoughtful in its depiction of a variety of Subjects that were all a part of the American Western Experience.A Fantastic Film filled with a subtlety of Style and a rough edge of what was often the cruelty of the wide open spaces with little or no Law Enforcement. It was up to Men such as these to evaluate a situation on the run and make Life and Death decisions. This is one of those that realistically relays what it must have been like along a Broken Trail.

Great acting.......great script/writing. Classic story or lessons that should be the basis for all great award winning films. Icing generally includes cinematography, authenticity, good supporting characters and acting/wardrobe. Never pass up a single Duvall film.....follow the actor who chooses his next role for the love of the story and writing not the fame and fortune. Here's a spoiler ;) Find the movie "wrestling earnest hemmingway" and watch a rare gem of a film that will resonate and dig into the the surface ...just the surface of great films. Gave this an 8 cuz only halfway through and soooo impressed had to look it up!

I like westerns and I picked this movie up at a discount not sure what to expect. Duval puts in yet another marvelous performance and Thomas Hayden Church redeems himself after his positively crude and awful characterization in the film Sideways. In fact, Church was every bit as impressive and Duval and that's saying a lot. Anyone looking for a lot of action won't find it in this movie but this is a wonderful character study with gorgeous cinematography and terrific performances in every roll. A few words about the ending...The film is antithetical to classic Hollywood story telling. Attractive and innocent young girls die and the hero (at least one of them) doesn't get the girl; yet, these results add to the enjoyability of the film reminding us that life often ends in disappointment even in America. The last frames offer a narrative of the future of the characters portrayed and from this one is lead to believe the story is based on real people. At the conclusion of the film however, there is a disclaimer that the movie is not based on any living person...I confess I was taken in by the rouse but I'm not complaining because it added to the poignancy of the ending. Americans are used to happy endings that when we encounter the bittersweet we often don't know how to respond. The ending of this movie unfolds slowly and deliberately giving us plenty of time to think about life's unfulfilled dreams and hopes.
