It's fun, it's light, [but] it has a hard time when its tries to get heavy.

THIS REVIEW WILL HAVE SPOILERS!!! Wizards First Rule was the first fantasy book I've read cover to cover. My first copy has a repaired cover made of duct tape - that's how many times I read the novel. Richard and Kahlan spoke to me. I felt like I was on the adventure with them in a way other novels hadn't. I felt the heartbreaks that Kahlan would feel when she realized that she was falling in love with Richard but could not act due to her powers of the Confessor. Zeddicus Zul Zorander was genius, odd, and exactly what a wizard should be. Darken Rahl was the villain he should have been. I felt like I was part of that world when I read the books.I first came to know that the books were becoming a TV show when I saw new cover art for Wizards First Rule. And needless to say, I was excited. My favorite fantasy characters, coming to life!!! I must say, I was disappointed, almost from the get-go. While I understood some changes (The reason why the boundary was failing for example), while others I didn't like, if not outright hated. They changed how the boxes of Orden worked, they changed the fact that Kahlan was already the Mother Confessor, and that was just in the first episode.Other details in the show grew incessantly grueling to watch as a fan of the novels. Key relationships changed - IE: Darken's relationship to Richard (hint: Darken is not Richard's half-brother - he is something a little more...startling). Denna's character seemed to be irredeemable while Deena in the books, while cruel, had redeemable qualities, and over time, I as a reader grew to pity her and was sad for her upbringing. And the number 1 reason why the show irked me - Jensen, Richards half-sister, was not supposed to show up!!! Book 7!! Long after the events that were going on!! That being said, I did feel there were positives, and after discussion's with my friend who is a fan of the books, agree with as well: The characters, while different, were fundamentally the same, and most of the main characters felt like there novel counterparts - the only exception being Richard, but he fit the TV New world better than the Novel Richard would.I felt that Zedd was Zedd, and Kahlan was Kahlan. Darken Rahl was as sinister in the show as he was in the Book (though some of his more gruesome abilities were toned down).I think that, as my friend put it: If this was its own show, with its own original characters and world, it would be a good show. In fact, if I try and watch it that way, I do find it to be at least entertaining (it may have made an 8/10 if that were true).I also believe, as it was with another of my friends, if I saw the show first, before reading the novel, I may have liked the show a lot better. But, coming from the novels, the number of changes don't sit well with me. I know Terry Goodkind had worked with the director on the show (not as closely as he had first indicated he would be), but still, I don't think the show really did the books justice. In short: Is the show entertaining, at times, yes. But for a fan of the novels, I think it falls short. Without the aforementioned pro's (characters, mainly), it would have got a lower rating. But it got two stars up for character level.

I'm a great fan of the book and I could not believe my eyes when I saw the TV series. I admit - I could not watch more than half of the first and a few minutes of the second one. My wife is also a fan of the books , she watched the whole series and said that MAYBE she could've liked the series if she hadn't read the book - the series were OK, but have nothing in common with the impression the books makes. So make your choice - either read the book, or watch the series. doing both leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. For a long time. Ten lines of text in order to post the review - OK I'll add what I think of the actor who plays Richard - the first thing I thought when I saw him was "What? Such a tiny and gentle Richard wouldn't last a minute in the book.". There is nothing masculine about him, he just looks funny.

After just watched the first block-of-two episodes, my impression was - interesting, fun, good visuals - yet not entirely convincing, a bit shallow and clichéd. Should be somewhere between 7,5 and 8 max. And there you go, ratings at the moment are 7,7. So, with 306 other reviews, and my impression so in tune with 27,989 other users who voted, it's not really asking for much further contribution from me. So, I'll be short. The actors are charming and pleasing to look at, even though not always conveying the right intensity or quality of emotions (sometimes too high, sometimes too low, sometimes just misplaced) - but I will attribute that to the director. What else is he there for if not to notice, guide and correct? Story and characters are not bad, even though clichéd - but so's the whole genre, isn't it? It's still interesting enough, and has quite vivacious - although at times abrupt and naive - dynamic. So, all in all if you have extra time, you're fan of the genre or the series of novels it originates from, this could be a fun adventure. I might just give it a go.
