I remember seeing this cartoon when I was younger and now, just by watching it again brings back my childhood. Its a funny disturbing show but surprisingly now, I realize I get the hidden adult humor they tossed in it and thinking back, kinda surprises me I grew up watching this kind of show, as well as Ren and Stimpy an Ahh! Real Monsters. I won't get into that because they are all so similar. But out of all those shows, my opinion, I prefer Rockos Modern life. I think it fits in for anybody in their 20s because it's about a 20 year old guy, Rocko who has his own place, has a job (but low budget), friends (Heffer and Philburt) to party with, and just anything common for a guy in his 20s. But besides the point, I love this show, I own it on DVD, finally and If you are looking for some comedy for kids or teenagers, this show fits right in.

One of the few channels I watched as a kid back in the 1990s was Nickelodeon, and the 90s is where the channel shined brightly because of its original quality programming for both kids and adults. One show stood out from the rest in my opinion, though The Ren & Stimpy Show came at a close second. No, the one that stood out the most to me is "Rocko's Modern Life".Created by Joe Murray, who has garnered success in the independent film industry prior to this, and debuting in 1993, this animated comedy series was genius for its social satire, lovable and original characters, and sense of style in terms of art and creativity. It was one of Nick's stand-out shows next to the likes of Ren & Stimpy and Rugrats, eventually receiving an Emmy. After the show's success, Murray would later create another Emmy-winning series "Camp Lazlo", only it would be aired on Nickelodeon's rival channel, Cartoon Network. Today, Rocko has garnered a cult following and is hailed as one of the most memorable cartoons of the era. So the question is, does it still hold up?First, the plot of the whole series. Rocko is a wallaby (a kangaroo-like marsupial) rumored to be in his 20s who moved from Australia to the fictional and wacky city of O-Town in order to try and live a normal, modern American lifestyle with his loyal dog Spunky, his best friends Heffer, a steer, and Filburt, a turtle, and finally his grumpy neighbors the Bigheads, both of which are cane toads. Normal? In a show like this? Yeah. Like that's gonna happen, which is why I use such a term loosely. Each episode of the show is riddled with slapstick, jokes for kids and adults, and social satirical commentary that represented certain events and political views. So, now that's out of the way, does the show hold up for what it accomplishes? In my opinion, it more than holds up. I love the animation, character designs and art style, and I also love the social satire that it provides. Hell, a lot of the commentary is still relevant today. For example, there is an episode in season 3 entitled "Zanzibar" that focuses on recycling and cleaning up the environment, which today is reminiscent of pretty much every "Going Green" program in existence that doesn't go to the extreme (Greenpeace, anyone?), and they do it in a musical fashion. No, I'm not kidding. This is one of my personal favorite cartoons from the 1990s, let alone one of my personal favorite television shows of all time. I myself have gotten the honor of pre-ordering the complete series from Shout! Factory and also receiving a lithograph signed by the creator himself as a bonus last year. The inner child in me is still screaming with joy. I am unsure if the show is still running in re-runs on Nickelodeon, as I don't even watch the network anymore, but if you're looking to purchase the series on DVD in the highest quality possible, your best bet is on Shout! Factory's website, as they are the only ones as of this review that have obtained the distribution rights from Viacom. It's definitely worth a purchase if you want to revisit a good part of the golden age of television animation.

Too bad that Nickelodeon doesn't have anymore the excellent cartoons that it used to air, like "The Ren & Stimpy Show", "Angry Beavers", "Invader Zim", or this one, replacing all of them with horrible shows as "Jimmy Neutron", "El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera", "Fanboy and Chum Chum" or "Planet Sheen" (Which is, in my humble opinion, one of the worst programs ever made) Anyway, "Rocko's Modern Life" was, and it always will be one of my favorite cartoons from all times, mostly because it was incredibly funny watch, with absurd (and hilarious) situations, interesting characters, excellent stories, and lots, lots of memorable gags, that still made laugh every single time I remember them. From all those cartoons that tried to imitate the style of "The Ren & Stimpy Show", "Rocko" was easily the best of them, being one of the very few that found its own style, and that also was able to combine intelligent, sophisticated humor with the elements of scatological comedy that made famous "The Ren & Stimpy Show" in first place. (And just to point it out, "The Ren & Stimpy Show" had good stories and sophisticated humor, but sadly, what most of the people seem to remember are the grotesque aspects of that cartoon, instead of the comedy brilliance of most showed on it.) "Rocko's Modern Life" is great series, and still today, it remains as one of the best Nicktoons ever made.10/10 (And I would give it eleven stars if I could)

Rocko's Modern Life was one of my all-time favorite shows as a kid. It is about a wallaby named Rocko, his dog who (possible spoiler) eats *everything*, Spunky, his two best friends, Heffer Wolfe (a steer) and Filburt (a turtle), and his froggy neighbors, Ed and Beverly Bighead. I love Rocko, and, whoever says that Nickelodeon isn't all that good anymore, I agree! I'm not saying I hate iCarly and those other new shows (I may think they'd be okay if I ever get the chance to watch them), but ever since Jimmy Neutron and some of the other new shows took the places of Doug, Pete & Pete, Aah! Real Monsters, Rocko's Modern Life, and the other Nickelodeon classics, Nick's totally not the same anymore, and I hate that! My cousin Jordan told me Rocko didn't come on anymore, and I kind of had that feeling and was like, "I hate that!" However, if you have easy access to the Internet, don't fret. You can still watch some of the fun episodes about Rocko, Heffer, Filburt, Spunky, and all their craziness on a little website-it's called YouTube!
