Sarah returns with her father and uncle to fix up the family's longtime summerhouse after it was violated by squatters in the off-season. As they work in the dark, Sarah begins to hear sounds from within the walls of the boarded-up building. Although she barely remembers the place, Sarah senses the past may still haunt the home.

The acting is good, and the firecracker script has some excellent ideas.

This film honestly did take me by surprise. Silent House was well acted, and well shot. The actors, including Olsen, all performed very well in this movie. This movie is affective when it comes to being scary and giving the audience members chills, I know it did for me. There really isn't any background music or anything, which was probably the most effective part of the movie when it comes to being scary. The plot summary for silent house was pretty intricate and unique, never really seen a plot like this one before. This movie has very cool twists and turns, especially towards the ending, and to be honest, they made the film. This movie was very enjoyable and is a cool flick for horror movie fans. Some scenes did drag just a bit, but not much, and once you got through them, things sped up again and got back on track. Overall, I give Silent House a 7/10.

Sarah and her father, John, along with Sarah's uncle, Peter, all go to their lakeside home to clear things out and do some repairs as they have decided to sell it. Not long after Peter leaves to get some supplies, Sarah hears noises from inside the house, so her father goes to see if he can see anyone. After hearing a loud thump, Sarah discovers that her father has been attacked. What was supposed to be a simple job in clearing out their house, turns into a fight for survival. Unfortunately, there's something more going on here than she thinks.Silent House is an American remake of the Uruguayan film La Casa Muda (The Silent house) and is actually a pretty decent psychological thriller. The original film was good but it was a film that you really had to pay attention too, and this one isn't really too dissimilar but it does kind of spell it out in a more obvious way. There are obviously a few different scenarios between the two, as remakes tend to have, with one of the main ones being the character of Sophie...a childhood friend of Sarah's, but this isn't bad because these differences give the film it's own wee feel.Like I mentioned above, the film is one that you have to pay attention to because it's easy to miss little things here and there that all add to the story. Miss these and you'll be sitting there wondering that the hell is going on. Also, it's not a "lost footage found" type of horror either, so if you are expecting something like that then you'll be sorely disappointed. The movie - like the original - is filmed in such a way that it seems like one long continuous shot which I feel adds to the atmosphere of the film as there are no breakaways to interrupt the flow. Silent House is pretty well acted and while it's not the most amazing film you'll ever see, it's still a decent movie worth watching.

A girl (Elizabeth Olsen) is trapped inside her family's lakeside retreat and becomes unable to contact the outside world as supernatural forces haunt the house with mysterious energy and consequences.Somehow avoiding the child actress path of her sisters, this was the first film released with Elizabeth Olsen, and she appears in every shot of the film. As she has gone on to become a rather big deal within a few years, this film could be something that fans will want to look at. Clearly she has talent. The plot is minimal, the acting is adequate and the film as a whole is more or less average -- not something that is going to make you want to tell all your friends about. But the key to its success is the editing; although we know this is not one continuous shot, the cuts effectively make it seem so. This is similar to Hitchcock's "Rope" (one of his best films) in that respect. And even today it remains a good feat.

I don't usually write reviews here - but I was surprised at the number of negative comments about this film. I allowed the low rating to affect my judgement, and it was about 30 minutes into the film before I realised it was pretty good. "The technique is poor / excessive". Hmmm. The technique allows full- on jump-out-of-your-seat moments, and long periods of almost dreamlike tension. Don't you like that?"You don't know enough about the people beforehand". No, it's a film. You find out about the characters by watching it."It's predictable". Wow, really? I didn't see what was coming. As the story progressed, I was wondering about the nature of the attacker - real? imaginary? supernatural? - it was reminiscent of the French film "Ils". IMHO - the acting is good, there are bits that made me jump, and the film makes some serious points; and I was left wondering what some of the reviewers on here are looking for in a "scary movie".
