It was OK. I don't see why everyone loves it so much. It wasn't very smart or deep or well-directed.

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

I barely got 5 minutes into this before checking out. Whoever was trying to direct this clearly had no clue what they were doing. The camera is out of focus and there seem to be a lot of frames missing. The zooms are annoying and the start is just a lot of random disjointed insults. It might make sense later on, but I doubt the physical appearance changes.

While definitively unique and energetic, the movie struggles to have focus on any plot point that presents us, which is a shame 'cause there are some interesting ideas and concepts that are barely touched on: the romance (which disappointingly had very few chemistry), the aliens's different cultures, "the punk", etc. Aside from that, the acting was decent, although is (obviously) Elle Fanning that really steals the show as well as Nicole Kidman, the soundtrack is great, both from the punk and the ambient electronic experimental alien-ish side of the music, the directing is decent, all in all is really the script that makes the film fall short, which, again, is disappointing for a film with this clear passion and effort put into.

Enn (Alex Sharp) is a disaffected youth in late 70's suburban London. He and his friends follow the local punk scene. He writes his zine and has trouble talking to girls. The boys crash a party after the club. They find the people there strange and Enn believes them to be a cult. Zan (Elle Fanning) decides to leave the group to find unique experiences with Enn. The group go to see advent-guard artist Queen Boadicea (Nicole Kidman). This has some fun and some weirdness. The problem is that it doesn't have quite enough fun nor enough weirdness. Director John Cameron Mitchell is best known for Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I did check out the Neil Gaiman graphic short story which has two regular dudes from an all-boys school and the story takes place mostly at that party. I'm sure Mitchell added the punk element which actually added color to the story. Elle Fanning is definitely a beauty which explains why Enn would tolerate her weirdness. The story should really take place over one night. That has the tendency to intensify the narrative. It would also allow Kidman to join the movie earlier. I only laughed once when the aliens blocked the hallway in formation. Otherwise, this is an odd little movie which fails to elevate.

I had no idea what this film was before watching it. At first I was going to turn it off because I had visions of a new version of Romper Stomper set in punk Britain. I'm glad I stayed with it because when I realised there was an alien storyline it became interesting. I recognised Elle Fanning of course and then Nicole Kidman. Nicole of course a very well established actress who can take on a whole variety of roles with ease. Elle Fanning though ran this show from start to finish. She's proven herself very capable of virtually any sort of role and adept at difficult ones. She shines in this movie playing Zan the alien, who enjoys punk and falls in love with a human. She's utterly believable in her role and I'm surprised she hasn't had an Oscar yet, but I don't think it will be long before she gets one. Entertaining and out there film which i hugely enjoyed on many levels.
